A friend is driving from Ajijic to Puerto Vallarta in a couple of weeks.

Is there a new toll road that cuts the 5 hour drive time?

It's 5.5 hours from PV driving at approx 75 mph on the toll road. The slow areas are getting from Ajijic to the toll road and going thru the jungle curves. We will be doing it next week at approx 65 - 70 mph.

The new section is not open yet. I have heard it will cut 2 hours off the drive time.

Every year they say "next year" so who knows. I have not seen how far along they are. Perhaps someone else has more details?

John, doesn't it usually take that long on a bus (if memory serves me right)? wouldn't a car be faster?

I just drove that route two weeks ago - 5 hours door-to-door from SAT to Nuevo Vallarta and 5.5 hours to return.

The last stretch through the mountains was great. Haven't had as much fun since driving through the Rockies.

Wow didn't realize those buses traveled that fast, anyway, car way better than a bus. Enjoy your trip John.

Where is the new road running? Something different from 15D than 200 from Tepic to PV?

Yes it would be something different off the 15D. I assume it will head straight over the mountains instead of going around. Kind of like the route through Ameca & Mascota except straighter and double wide.

Hasn't that road been talked about for years and not gone anywhere? Has any part of it been done or is it like our Carretera will be widened to four lanes. Yeah, sure, we'll all be pushing up daisies when that happens. LOL.
