Re: parcel post from canada to ajijic
You better send it 6 to 8 weeks in advance. That is how long my mail has taken to get there from Canada. If you want it there sooner use Fed Ex, UPS or DHL. Of course, it will cost you more..........
Re: parcel post from canada to ajijic
Be careful what you send. Any clothing items, including shoes, and linens will be charged with a duty fee of up to 50% of the value of the items. A friend sent me a French press and coffee canister. She spent $45 USD to ship it from her end. I had to pay an additional 350 pesos to retrieve it from the Chapala post office. Those were the shipping and duty fees, not to mention the actual cost of the press and canister! I could have bought one down here for less than one of the fees. A man who was living lakeside with his two kids, had his wife ship their daughter's ballet slippers down here because the daughter was taking ballet lessons and wanted her own shoes. The used shoes were detained at the boarder and even with the help of a local mail service, the shoes never made through customs. Mom made a trip down to bring the shoes! International flights allow you two suit cases per traveler. The cost of a third suit case @ 50 lb is two hundred $USD, it could be less than mailing same items. My advise is to check it out to see what is the most cost efficient. :)

Two of three packages sent to me from the USA by mail in the last year did not make it. Suggest you, at least, send it registered.

"maybe i will just have to do without those quirky spices"
There was a story within the last week regarding a "big bust" somewhere in Mexico followed by a story a couple of days later that they "busted" laundry detergent. One can only speculate what might happen with quirky spices!

There was also a story of a lady flying down from San Diego, staying for only a week, bringing her own special creamer in her luggage. The ludgage was detained at the airport for inspection. The airline returned her baggage two days before she flew back home, minus the creamer. So, not only did she go without her special creamer, she also went without her clothes and other personal items for 5 days of her stay!
Then there is several stories of people bringing in flower bulbs, teas, M&M and art supplies without any incidents! You never know when you'll be lucky!
Sorry to be such a wet blanket! :)

Overall it's easier and safer to simply check and additional bag with your extra stuff. When Aduana asked what you have simply say "ariculos por me casa." I've never had a problem with that method.

And for extra luggage charge, less stressful and cheaper overall.

Re: parcel post from canada to ajijic
Went through this just this month. Checked out UPS, FedEx USPS and private movers. It turned out that airlines overweight, oversize and any other charge is
FARRRRRRRR cheaper than any other source we checked out. And we had no problems w/ customs

Re: parcel post from canada to ajijic
Just an added note. When I packed mine I checked w/ the airlines on what constituted overweight/ oversize. In my case anything over 50# was overweight.
So I simply packed one trunk and went off to the P.O. have it weighed. If it was 2# over 50# I took 2# out. Continued to do that until I ended up w/ 7 trunks and one set of golf clubs (of course the clubs were oversize and I just had to bite the bullet).
I must say the airlines (U.S. airways) agents were very helpful. One bag was overweight and one under, and they helped me move the stuff from one bag to another. Hope this will help.

We have lived in Jocotepec for 9 years. We have a box at the local post office. We have someone pick up our mail in Canada and send it here every 15 days. The time from Canada (Kenora, On.) has been about 19 days give or take a day or two. Also we have never lost a thing in the Mexican mail. We also had parsels delivered to our door in 4 days.
