I was wondering if anyone could offer some tips in driving down from Canada in late Dec 2015 ie best USA route will be leaving from Toronto area........I have been told Laredo Tx is best crossing? and to use toll roads in Mexico and the usual get mexican insurance etc. but tips from the experienced are always better than the travel associations.

Thanking you in advance

I have crossed at Laredo and McAllan, both are good. I prefer to overnight in the Mcallan/Pharr area. Stay on the Cuota's (toll roads), don't drive after dark, enjoy the trip!

Before you enter Mexico, review your maps to familiarize yourself with the geography. Of particular import is knowledge of which cities you want to pass, and which you want to go toward, vs into. That way, you will know when to concentrate your attention to a particular city on the excellent big green signs. Route signs are rare and subject to change.
Enjoy your trip and stop to smell the roses along the way.

We have driven many times from S/W Ontario. We have found the easiest route was:
Detroit
Cincinnati
Nashville
Little Rock
Texarkana
Houston
McAllen

The turnoff from Houston to Mc Allen can be tricky. It is on the left hand side of I 10....you just follow the road...not an exit.
