Tzintzuntzan, MIchoacan, Mexico
On the eastern shore of Lake Patzcuaro, lies the town of Tzintzuntzan. Known for their basket weaving and weaving of other products from reeds and straw, we refer to it as the Christmas town because of all of their straw Christmas decorations. There is an open air mercado surrounded by vendors displaying a variety of goods out in the open. Just up the road alongside of the highway, there is a huge Cantera Stone fabricator and some ancient pyramids to boot.
Location about 20 minutes from Patzcuaro:

It's only about a visit and history .... but as a visitor I didn't find anything unpleasant

Not unpleasant Scot, just not the big smiles and friendly attitudes of the Jalisco folks. I loved the area, and Lake Zirajuen (sp?) is GORGEOUS.

Kip:
I speculate that the people lacking those "smiles" may have been Purépecha, the indigenous people that populate the area? From what I was told both by a Gringo business owner from Patzcuaro and a Mexican business owner from Santa Clara del Cobre, this is somewhat standard for them to mistrust outsiders and they consider Mexicans to be such too. As the Gringo explained, it is somewhat like the "Hatfields & McCoys" in Appalachia. If you have followed any of the events in Cheran, that boils down to the "indigenous" against everyone. I would liken it to driving onto certain Indian Reservations in the US and the attitude one receives from the Native Tribe.
