Quiroga, Michoacan

While we have probably driven through Quiroga five or six times, we have always been on our way somewhere else and have failed to stop. This trip we decided that we owed the town a visit. Quiroga is located off the NE corner of Lake Patzcuaro and could be categorized as the "market town" for the area.

We started our visit in Santa Fe de la Laguna, which is virtually a suburb and the highway is lined with pottery shops. From there we drove into centro Quiroga and since it was Saturday market day, we ventured into the heart of the market where one can see anything and everything! Shops along the main drag again have most anything one might want and the prices appeared to be very reasonable based upon our experience.

Quiroga's claim to fame is carnitas and one can find this delicacy in restaurants or the numerous street stands and carts.

We stopped for lunch in Quiroga and had some of the pork carnitas that they are famous for. Very good. A lot like the pulled pork that you get NOB.

Quiroga is famous for its "pork carnitas" and El Rey Carnitas on the main plaza is probably the best known restaurant:
