John, I'm sure Spencer can give you the correct legal information but as far as I can tell the "correct" documents are the ones that the official standing at your window thinks you should have.
Sometimes, the ability to speak Spanish, an air of confidence and a Mexican in the passenger seat can increase the chanses that your documents will be considered correct. Sometimes not.
I got snapped out of a line of cars at a reten coming back from the beach last Sunday. A federal police with a lot of ' tude asked to see my car papers. He tapped on the calcomania on my windshield and asked why I had not renewed it. I whipped out my FM card and explained the deal about my importation permit being valid as long as the FM is current...I think he was just testing me to see what I knew.
I lost that paper that the sticker is attached to when they give it to you about 8 years ago. I hear that one is important.
If you don't have all your papers, John, just dazzle them with your charm.

We drive a Mexican plated car we purchased in Guadalajara and, regardless of what the law says, we only have the originals of our current registration and Tarjeta de Circulacion, our auto insurance and, of course our driver´s licenses. We only carry a copy of our factura evidencing our having purchased the vehicle from Baruqui Motors as the original factura is far too valuable and essential in Mexico to be risked in the car no matter what the law may stipulate. Of course,we carry our "inmigrado" cards and passports when we travel to Chiapas as retenes run by immigration, the army and the feds are ubiquitous down south due to the proximity with Guatemala and the amount of trafficking in illegals. When we are driving around Lakeside or Metro Guadalajara we do not carry our visas or passports as, if they are stolen, it is a real hassle to replace them.
Whatever Spencer may say, I would advise against carrying your original factura pertaining to your Mexican purchased automobile in the car as a rule as, if your car is stolen and your factura is in the car you are SOL.

One of the reasons I asked this is because a friend of mine got stopped bu a Transito here this week. She was asked for her FM 2. She showed a copy and the officer said she must carry the ORIGINAL. Huh!!!

The cop was right. We all must carry our visa cards, not copies. That is the law.

What would be the cost for a Notarios's certification of a copy the import permit and FM visa???
I'm guessing from past experience over $1,000 pesos.

I doubt it would be that high, but you can check by calling the Notario below. You can compare with other Notarios too.
NOTARIO NO. 5

Certified copies are 50 pesos (at Notary 5 across the street), it is the certification of your signature that costs 500 pesos and maybe more if it is a business document.
Yes, NEVER CARRY YOUR ORIGINAL FACTURA IN YOUR CAR IF IT IS MEXICAN PLATED, you will never need this item and it is irreplaceable and if lost or stolen can cause many problems.

Only notarios can do wills so try any and all other attorneys who want to collect and do your will, many are coyotes and just get between you and the notary and collect extra and slow things down.
I am happy to review a will or a draft prior to your signing so that you know everything you do or do not want will or will not be included.
