Cafe Cairo
A review of the, new to Ajijic Egyptian restaurant.
Located on Parroquia, north side kitty corner to the Marcos Castellanos school. Address Parroquia number 1.
Hours are not listed on their takeout menu, however they have given a cel number: 331 044 1441
A very nice selection of Egyptian and Middle eastern food with exotic drinks. Amongst them and highly recommended is the Mango Milkshake. Not only is it good, it's practically a meal itself. Freshly cut mango whizzed in a mixture of milk and ice cream. Do not miss this one!
Also interesting was the rosewater, the flavoring in Turkish delight. There were many others however they are not listed on the takeout menu. There is no wine, but they may serve beer, we didn't have any.
I had hummus, excellent, as in world class and quite a lot of it, plus babaghanouj (eggplant, garlic and Tahini dip, with Falafel, ( crushed fava beans onion and spices in fried patties) topped with sesame seeds. Very very good.
The big guy had the Viagra sandwich, seafood, and egyptian potatoes, wow, really yummy and different.
The decorations were well done, with tastefully colored gauze panels covering the boveda ceiling, plus very interesting custom made chairs with pyramids carved into the backs.
Give it a try, it's almost like being on vacation. They have done an excellent job, and were exceptionably personable.
In the high season they will do home delivery by Moto in the village. At the moment it is takeout only.
Enjoy.

Nice to know they will do takeout. I haven't had babaghanouj in about 15 years and my mouth is watering just thinking about it. I understand they make tabbouleh as well.
Raq, if you know "The Jerusalem" (two locations) in Toronto...do you care to make a comparison?

Could not agree with you more E-raq.Wael's food is outstanding and authentic Middle Eastern. Love this guy, his food and his personality. When he was in Riberas, I used to go once a week. Now that he has moved to Ajijic Centro, I regret to say, that I have not been there. Cannot deal with the parking situation in Centro Ajijic and avoid it whenever possible. I wish him the best of success and for those of you that have not been there, I encourage you to try this young Egyptian man's restaaurant, as he attempts to grow and expand. chico/bronco/manny/susan/zoey/terry, etc.

I don't ferret, however being real addicts of greek food, we would definitely say that the hummus was way better than we've ever had either on the Danforth or even in Greece. Their babaghanouj is very good, but not the creamy texture you may have had in Canada, still very enjoyable. The falafal were really very good, as are the Egyptian potatoes, they are an incredible combination of soft as in really soft on the inside, and crunchylicious on the outside served with mayo, I think and ketchup, we don't need to go there, to the ketchup I mean.
They do make tabbouleh. Keep in mind the portions are very large. We were stuffed after the appetizers, I sampled the potatoes but was too full. My better half couldn't even start the sandwich and took it home for dinner.
The total bill came to 320 pesos and was almost enough for two meals for both of us.

Go down Colon turn left as if heading to Memo's then turn left onto Marcos Castellanos, first street on your left. Park as close to the church as you can. You'd be surprised at Centro, it has spiffed up very nicely. Plus there is a new bakery on Colon right side a few entrances down from the plaza. Gotta be early, which lets me out, but it looked very promising, and parking would be a doddle in the early morning. They also have a deli counter and italian pasta.

Re: Cafe Cairo
It seems to be mostly neglected, but there IS a parking lot near the plaza.
Fee?? It's past the church about a block, on the other side of the street, nearer to the carreterra.

Yes he does, thanks for mentioning that. Not only great for those hot nights, but, the happy hostess is one who knows where to shop. ;-)

Zaragoza above the plaza has parking spaces much of the time but not always. Nice wide street and walk down.
