Looking for US retired military vets
Hi,
I have been gathering as much info as I can so that I can make an informed decision on a move to Lake Chapala. I am looking for any US retired military vets that live in or near Lake Chapala. Do you use any kind of VA (Veterans Administration) healthcare in Mexico? If so, how are you doing it?
I am a Vietnam vet and get all of my healthcare through the VA. Just wondering if I can somehow leverage my VA benefits (doctor visits, medications, etc....) for healthcare while living in Lake Chapala area.
Thanks,
Gordy

Re: Looking for US retired military vets
I am retired USAF. Also 100% VA disabled.
I use the Foreign Medical Program of the VA. They reimburse me for issues that are 'service connected' and which the VA recognizes as such.
Service connected is the key.
Expect to wait between 2 to 3 months for reimbursement if eligible.

Re: Looking for US retired military vets
Georgetoo,
Thank you for the reply. I am 60% and was US Navy
Correct me if I am wrong but, if it is not related to the Service Connected then you have to pay for it out of your pocket?
I will read up on the "Foreign Medical Program" I don't have a clue to what it is.....

Foreign Medical Program (FMP) Registration Form
www.va.gov/vaforms/medical/pdf/vha-10-7959f-1-fill_110308.pdf
And yes your are correct. No disability service connected no pay.
However, you should be able to use TriCare for Life on the other issues.

George,
Thank you for the link to this form. I am researching what it takes to get my VA healthcare while in Mexico.
Take care,
Gordy

Check out the local American Legion:

I was reading one of their issues and there is a local medical office that accepts TriCare. Pretty cool since that is what I have. Anyway, you might want to email the Post about this. They would know if anybody.

In the Chapala Plaza , mornings and late afternoons are always some vets.
Many take the overnite bus to McCallen, Texas for VA treatments.
Chapala is very different than Ajijic, (which is far removed from the experience of living in Mexico). More economical & more Mexican

Yes there is a clinic that accepts TriCare in Ajijic. We just learned of it in I believe March or April. I let ProRaider, (aka Tim) know about it a few weeks later. And he has been there quite a few times. He lives behind Telmex in Ajijic, not too far from the clinic
He speaks highly of the clinic. (or he did the last time I saw him some 3 weeks ago before I came north for a few months)

Contact me by PM for info for Post 9 or 7 here in the Chapala area. I am a member of Post 9 but live a block from Post 7 and spend a lot of time with both. Too much info to post right here.

Here's the link to Dr Albert Dickson. He's able to bill Tricare and other insurances.
