iPad coaching for idiots (Me)
For the longest of times some of my more computer literate friends have been teasing me about my lack of knowledge of any mac product. I got teased even more when I used to write Tech Talk for the Reporter and would almost never mention a Mac.
And I deserved being teased. I'm just a little smarter now that I have had an iphone 4 now since last fall.
Well, on I either last Saturday or last Sunday I went to the local Seattle Apple store and picked up a "new" iPad. Thank God the Pad works much like the iPhone, but gosh do I have a lot to learn.
It was suggested by a few here that I start this new topic where folks can talk about their experiences, problems, etc with the iPad.
I have nothing to add here other than the fact that because it's kind of cool up north and raining out, I'm going to be doing a lot of reading about my iPad on my Dell laptop where I downloaded the iPad users guide.
Why, you ask, didn't I just download it to my iPad? My answer is hidden in the title of this topic (Idiot). That's right, I'm not smart enough yet to do that. But I'm going to learn (I hope)

Well, let us know how it goes, Pete! I have an iPad too but can hardly even find the damn ON button. And I have two Kindles that I love and use daily.

Pete:
Just find a convenient Seattle coffee shop and latch onto a techie on a caffeine high and you will learn in no time!

But I am an old guy, look at my age. It's shown below my picture which was taken a very long time ago by someone who also posts here.
And changing the subject just a little bit;
we have a great iThing (mostly iPad) club that meets every Friday morning at 9:30 AM, followed by a Msft meeting until about 11:45 at the LCS
Its a great place to learn about whatever product from others, some of whom are beginners, others who know a great deal.

Okay I give up. I don't want to be humiliated in a group of Mac people, even if most of them turn out to be Mac illiterate like me. I admit it - I have some kind of dyslexia when it comes to Mac products. My apologies to those with general dyslexia. Why the F do they hide everything important like say the ON button, and I hear they make you drag things to a trash basket to close them? Why oh why!!!!
I still have the same damn iPad I reference half a year ago, and the only progress I've made is to plug it in to recharge it and somehow accidentally turn it on (Lord knows how that happened, I had pushed all those nearly invisible tiny buttons trying).
POINT OF THIS RANT: ==> I would like to treat someone to a lunch or dinner at a cafe that has wireless, and just help me subscribe to WIRED Magazine on my iPad. I just want to read the frickin magazine on it.
Thanks,
Merry

Re: iPad coaching for idiots (Me)
I feel your pain Merry, ours sat charging for six months without use.
My hubby has now taken three lessons from Helperguy and is now surfing, doing e-mail and reading e-books (at a rather piggy rate I might add 'cuz he can now make the font whatever size he wants).
Helperguy charges 300 pesos for an hour of one on one instruction. It is worth every peso. Oh, and this past weekend we set up Skype with the iPad and on Sunday did family calls...the resolution on the iPad 3 is to die for.

Ohhhh Helperguy is also Mac-literate! How awesome!! I find it's rather like left-brained/right-brained, hard to find people who can swing both ways.

When I got mine, over a year ago, I asked for the instructions, they said it's so easy, you don't need any instructions! I can help if you'd like. PM me if you wish.

I downloaded the manual...137 pages...and that doesn't cover it all. So easy you don't need instructions? B.S.

Don't you just love it when you download a manual and then if you want a hard copy, it is your expense (rather than theirs) to print it?

Re: iPad coaching for idiots (Me)
If I was honest about it, I'd say it was a good ploy on their part to save money. I did print it and three hole punched it and put it in a binder. I find it far easier to learn something when the hard copy is beside the apparatus that I'm working with. I can add notes in the margin or highlight pertinent text for a quick find next time around.
I guess I'm just a Microsoft girl...properly typing on the iPad keyboard is very difficult...and the touch screen commands for a person who has nails are darn near impossible. My hubby loves it and that's all that matters.

Oh I am certain there is 100's of instructional videos on You Tube. You can watch those on your IPad.
Re: iPad coaching for idiots (Me)
ROTFLMAO! Yeah, you can watch those on your iPad when you figure out how to watch them on your iPad. At the moment, we use our laptop to watch the instructional videos for iPad and then follow through on the iPad. Ya think there's something wrong with this scenario?
