New Indian Restaurant in Ajijic
This from a friend of mine. And was trained to cook Indian food in India so this is the real thing. It is located in Ajijic on the south side of the plaza. I'm not sure where exactly but should not be difficult to find.
We will be opening our new restaurant on the plaza in Ajijic this week. Jasmine's will be open on friday, saturday and sunday from 4 until 8pm with classical music of india. we will be offering a choice of vegan and vegetarian sampler plates(with the traditional dairy included) and meat currys accompanied by our own chutneys. come by and join us.

She gave Indian cooking lessons once many years ago. Food was great and I learned to make a few dishes. I've since lost the recipes but now I know where to go and get it!

Directions to Jasmins: the street on the south side of the plaza - Bancomer is on the corner. It's right across from the kiosk in about the middle of the block. The address is parroquia #12A. it's in the middle of the block on the southside(bank side) of the plaza in ajijic. the sign will be in place next week, but you can't miss it, it's next to "el tepalo"restaurant ,is painted white with red tile awning.

Doubly awesome. Bob? ever been to Vij's on W 11th. If not, you should go before you go. Folks drive from Seattle for the experience. No reservations, not for anyone. I love standing in line with A list stars waiting for a table. The lambsickles - to die for.

Re: New Indian Restaurant in Ajijic
We visited Jasmine´s the first night they were open and enjoyed the food and music even though Dawg would have preferred my vegetarian sampler a bit spicier although that lack of spiciness in the sampler platter was compensated for to a degree by their very good housemade chutneys. A good meal and food almost certain to continue to get even better over time if they succeed which I hope thay do in since a good Indian restaurant will add greatly to the pleasure of living here.
Dawg got his taste for East Indian food while bumming around in 1969 in India and Uganda (before Milton Obote kicked out most the East Indians and confiscated their commercial and residential properties including some fantastic restaurants) so my expectations when it comes to the spiciness of Indian food (especially Southern Indian food) are probably on the high side as in, it ain´t spicy if one does not seriously tear up. They can´t make it that picante here if they want repeat customers except for yours truly and maybe a few others so that won´t happen, I´m sure. I think this is going to be a really fun place with good food and live music and I look forward to returning in the near future.
I agree with CB´s comment above about loving Indian food. Indian food is great from several different regions and I look forward to trying the lamb when they have it in the future as well as the vegetarian platters.
I wish the owners success and think they will make an outstanding contribution to the Ajijic community.

The owners lived in India where she learned to cook and he learned
Indian classical music. I have the luck of being there friends and trying
some of the meals that they are going to serve. All very good. It will
take a little time to get things going so be patient. Yep Dawg the lemon
peel chutney was pretty incredible.

There is a good Indian restaurant in Guadalajara called Goa that has good Samosa - veggie or chicken. Don't know if Jasmin's has them.

Re: New Indian Restaurant in Ajijic
That's good, they are like the Indian "perogy" and are a must at any good Indian restuarant. In fact, I was thinking that the Mexicans would probably really like samosa's. One could probably do well selling them at the local markets.
Re: New Indian Restaurant in Ajijic
With the popularity of BBQ chicken in Mexico, I would bet that Tandoori Chicken served with a good butter/garlic naan might be a real hit! Having a good clay oven lined with tile should be an easy project. The Mexicans already do a BBQ corn done in a very similar fashion to the way that Indians do theirs.

Re: New Indian Restaurant in Ajijic
OK....how about a Indian/Mexican fusion restaurant??? I have been to a Chinese/Indian fusion place in Vancouver and it is awesome.
Re: New Indian Restaurant in Ajijic
CB:
Chinese/Indian fusion makes sense because of the crossover use of curries. I believe or have been told that China is the only country in the world where the food gets hotter the further one gets away from the Equator.
I was thinking that a "street food" version of Tandoori Chicken would be a real hit. Heck with the yellow chickens in Mexico, they might pick up the red coloration even better than the bleached out skin found NOB?
As a kid, Tandoori Chicken was my favorite dish to order when we went out to a restaurant to eat. Generally speaking, it was much safer than ordering some of the curry dishes because one was fairly certain that the oven cooking method was hot enough to kill off most of the bad bugs.

Re: New Indian Restaurant in Ajijic
But just think of a hot curried Chimichanga or a tandoori chicken taco......
Re: New Indian Restaurant in Ajijic
Chimichangas have never been high on my list but a curry burrito or a Tandoori taco formed from garlic/butter naan with either chutney or Mexican condiments has some real potential. When you stop and think about it, naan isn't all that far removed from a tortilla.

They have the plans for a Tandoori Oven to be built in the back and boy wouldn't it be great to get a nice hit of Garlic Naan with a little butter on it. They
are using whole wheat Tortilla's to replace Naan right now just like someone mentioned earlier.

Re: New Indian Restaurant in Ajijic
While I certainly have no interest in ever owning a restaurant, I have to ask if one would ever consider opening a Mexican restaurant and not have access to tortillas? From my experience with Indian restaurants, Naan & Chapatis are must haves. Chapatis are done on a griddle and can be cranked out in fairly short order much like preparing tortillas. If this restaurant doesn't have a conventional oven, then maybe they are waiting for the Tandoor oven as those tend to produce a more flavorful Naan IMO.
All of this conversation has motivated me to prepare some Tandoori chicken this weekend and possibly try Tandoori tacos using Naan instead of tortillas.

A person is coming down to build a Tandoori oven so it wil be a little while before they have one. They are growing and learning as fast as they can. They don't want
to mess with quality so they go slow but right.

I did read on TOB that they had Naan the other day, so progress is being made.

What we don't need is another restaurant!!! Too many already. In 6 months to 1 year, they'll be history.

Re: New Indian Restaurant in Ajijic
Now John............some of the locals, including me, feel Indian food deprived.
There were at least four good ones within easy driving distance of where we lived in CA, and we patronized all of them. I sorely miss them.
So, no, we don't need another mediocre restaurant serving the same stuff all the rest dish up, but we could definitely use a good Indian restaurant.
Also, the special cuisine of Transylvania is nice if your family tends to be up all night.
