How many expats in Mexico?

I read an article on Mexconnect that begins with ...."there are a million expats in Mexico...." I don't believe that for a minute. But who knows? Common knowledge was that there were over 100,000 in Jalisco until an article in the Guadalajara reporter last fall showed Jalisco having only 40,000 or so FM2/3s valid. Given that some of those are held by snowbirds and some by employees of foreign firms that number seemed plausible to me. If that's true, and Lakeside is the biggest NA expat community in the world, where are the other 960,000 expats? Does anyone have a handle on this or are all these numbers just conjecture and SWAGs?
