Jim:

Actually USC & OR have identical overall records at 10/2 but OR has a 8/1 conference record while USC's conference is 7/2. Overriding all that consideration is that USC is on probation from the Pete Carroll and Reggie Bush era. Thus they are banned from postseason games.

Clear as mud - right?

Additional info: Stanford is 8/1 conference and 11/1 overall. They lost to OR, so OR wins the tiebreak and goes to the championship game. That said Stanford will go to a higher ranked BCS Bowl Game while OR will go to the Rose Bowl if they beat UCLA.

Neil, How many conferences have playoffs? I am dumber than dirt when it comes to suspentions from post season games....I am f@@ng confused....
How can this be considered a post season game? I follow College football...when did the Pac 10 become the Pac 12, and split for play off purpose. Obviously, I am way outa touch. Beer Last year Oregon played for national title.....no play off?

Not sure if CanuckBob has purchased enough memory for this forum to fully explain, so I will try the short version. The PAC 10 went to the PAC 12 this year with the additions of Colorado and Utah. With the upheaval in the various football conferences, the PAC 12 could become the PAC 30 or whatever. What happens in most conferences is that when they get over a certain number of teams, it means that there are not enough games or opportunities for all of the teams to play each other in the regular. As a result, the conferences usually designate or divide into an East/West or a North/South setup. With these divisions within a given conference - it mandates a playoff game.

It is all about MONEY!

University of Oregon is located in Eugene Oregon. Strong in liberal arts, architecture, law school etc etc. They wear yellow and green. Oregon State
University is located in Corvallis about 40 miles NW of eugene. Strong in
engineering, forestry, business, agriculture and a vet school. They dress in
Orange and black. It is a healthy rivalry that is good for both schools and
towns. Nothing like having 40,000 fans come to a town of 60,000 people
when the stadium is in the middle of the town. Not like Dodger/ Giants fans
we don't try to kill each other at least for now. Stereotypes apply for example
we always accuse everybody who is a duck fan as wearing Berkenstocks (german
sandles) and being uber liberal whereas Beaver fans are called Cow State and
more likely wearing a cowboy hat. Eugene OS is to Washington in Seattle and
OSU is to washington state in pullman. I now return you to the previous scheduled
program.

As I stated above, they became the PAC 12 this year. The PAC 10/12 has never received the recognition because the conference has always been known for one or two quality teams that were offense oriented and somewhat lame defenses. Much more exciting football - take a look at the SEC game between LSU & Alabama with a final score of 9-6. Game of the Century - HA! And now it looks like we will get a repeat in the National Championship Game. Not much interest on my part! Besides, if Bama were to win, the Dawg would be impossible!

To my way of thinking, the Ducks exemplify what college football should be all about - highly conditioned athletes playing the game at an exciting high speed level!

Quoting David: "New-weasel".
No question there! He is one of those coaches who one just has a gut feeling is always cheating! In my book, there are plenty of those type coaches out there.

I would partially agree with Zed's explanation. However, OSU is more committed to the Orange & Black than OR is to the Green & Yellow. With moneybags Nike aka Phil Knight backing their programs, the color lines and uniform combinations have become muddied.

In a previous life, I had both the OR Bookstore and the OSU Bookstore as customers. There was no comparison in the volume of business that I received from each. On top of the superior numbers generated at OR, their head buyer always made arrangements for comp tickets to their football games when I had a need. In spite of that, I really disliked Eugene since it reminded me so much of Berkeley, CA on acid! Corvallis was a much more normal city.

As a former OR resident, I have always backed OR football but have backed OSU basketball, a sport that I have a lesser interest in.

Yea I know Oregon is messing with the colors but the colors are the colors. Eugene does have a reputation but my favorite description of
Corvallis Is a law and order liberal community where most people claim to be more liberal than they actually are. It really is a family town
with a lots of microbrew bars and such. Downtown is still alive and one of the best farmers markets in the country for a small city. It alas
has become much too expensive to live in without a prof/engineer salary. The local folks are quite clueless on how the decisions made are
not very good for people of modest income but they have money so they don't care. Corvallis is also becoming a retirement community for
well to do folks. It is a very civilized place. Our cops will be polite to you before they taser you. :-) :-)

Lived there for 30 years and my father was a bigwig at OSU. I heard all the stories and can tell em but not in public. I rebelled and became
an engineer rejecting my fathers world. OSU is a very interesting place. OH yea The president of U of O got fired today. He poked the state
board of education and they poked him back. The alumni/students/nike dude are all pissed. I knew he was going to be blown away when he
gave raises for the professors when the rest of the state workers are being laid off and taking time off without pay. I don't care if the profs
deserved a raise. You just don't behave like that when others are suffering so now he will be gone after his contract is up in June. Gotta
love the politics of higher education public universities.
