Re: Feta cheese. Block not crumbled
It has become iffy to find it. I assume you're talking about the brand Apetina which is, imho, the only brand that tastes as it should. There are other brands in that format and they are not in brine in the package. Tastes mediocre by comparison. I am making do with the Apetina crumbled variety but my Greek Salad just doesn't quite taste the same.
Edited to add: looks like Walmart may have restocked it... but I think this refers to the Guadalajara Walmarts not Lakeside... https://super.walmart.com.mx/queso-brie/queso-blanco-arla-apetina-estilo-mediterraneo-200-g/00576046691255

I have bought it from Wal-Mart in the past but it's not always there.

Walmart only had crumbled. We bought a block at Panchos a while back but none now. We made our own brine to put it in using water and Kosher salt.

Thanks for the tip. How long did you have it in the brine before eating it?

You can eat it immediately. Brine keeps feta from drying out. Must cover the feta totally in brine. Crumbled in a carton dry out. We got the recipe off of Google.

Ferret's favorite Apetina block feta stocked @ Superlake's cold dairy section now, 133 pesos, saw it today.

We saw the feta for 133. The label says leche de vaca so it is made from cows milk but still good cheese.

Re: Feta cheese. Block not crumbled
My favorite is Trader Joe's Greek Feta, a block in brine, sheep's milk.. next time I visit the mom I guess.. unless Pancho decides to expand his TJ & Whole Food product line when he opens his new stores.. geez, both west side & the glass palace are SO large.. guess he found his 'investors'... keep waiting for that stuff to go on sale.. it just sits on the end caps. He seems to have given up on the Waitrose brand from the UK... reasonably priced products, especially liked the English black tea.
sorry for the hi jack of the thread

Yes goat and sheep feta is usually from Europe but cow milk usually from US. Still good feta.

Re: Feta cheese. Block not crumbled
I thought I'd add to this thread because this recipe came in one of my regular mail feeds. https://www.foodtalkdaily.com/recipes/salads/greek-salad/fresh-and-fast-summer-greek-salad-the-kitchen-garten-44360296
I LOL when I read this line... "For this summer greek salad, let me say that I highly recommend the chunk of feta that comes in a brine, not the pre-crumbled kind in those round plastic containers. The feta “dust” that comes out of those things is really an insult to salads everywhere. I want chunks of feta because more feta is betta! "

You can find block feta here. It comes sealed. We make our own brine from kosher salt and water. Enough to cover the cheese in a Tupperware type contain. Works and cheese stays a long time.

Re: Feta cheese. Block not crumbled
I will stick with Apetina which already comes in a brine in a sealed package... as I have already stated previously in this thread. Any other feta tastes remarkably like cardboard whether you brine if after or not at all. My taste for Greek food came from living close to downtown Toronto... along the Danforth, with it's multitude of Greek Restaurants.
