The trauma that the pandemic has brought on many people is very real, just as war, poverty, and other calamities has on others. But why does wearing a mask and following other sanitary rules bring out the worse in Americans? Why do the Karens, racists, homophobes, and other haters grab all the attention in the US?

I think it had to have been an accident. Don't you think that IF it was let loose on purpose that the guilty party would have protected their own citizens first?
Just read an article (sorry, didn't copy the link) that three scientists at the Wuhan lab were very sick with an unknown virus in November of 2019.
