I tried throwing down grass seed once and at the end of the day I went outside to have a cold beer along with the birds who were eating all of the seeds.

I can net off this small area from the birds. Guess I'll check all the nurseries.

Re: Grass seed
I have bought those small strips of grass something like .5m x 1m for 20 pesos each at the nursery in West Ajijic and then checkerboard the pieces in the yard.

Bob, listen to him. That is the way to go! Tossing grass seed with visions of a nice cool green patch of thick grass is harder than it sounds. I've tried it too. Birds and gophers werr ecstatic.

I never can remember how to find it. I will get an address for you soon since I need more grass next week. Bout the best I can do is to say it is on the South side of the carretera West of the Smoke House but East of El Bajio.

Re: Grass seed
The vivero behind SuperLake usually has rolls of sod and also the Vivero on the highway, mountainside, opposite La Huerta plaza (where the fish store is).

And Vivero Azucena above Ajijic Clinic usually has some. Just about any of the good viveros, CB.

Re: Grass seed
Agreed TR. However, having tried to grow grass from seed and from sod here in Mexico, I would say it's an exercise in futility. There are a million ways to have an outdoor area without any grass and, anyway, it's a waste of water imho. YMMV.

Re: Grass seed
I went to Azucena Vivero last week to see about re-election my little jardin....
about 10 square mts...it gets lots of share especially in the winter. He said there is no grass available here that does well in shade...grrrr. I am now going to look for crushed rock I guess...dogs can't kill that!!!!

Re: Grass seed
This is what we did after ripping out the sod (which we didn't want in the first place but were assured it was deep root grass for hot climates). The front was done first and I never was fond of the small gravel in between the stones so, at the back, we spaced the stones more but used small river rock in between. In either case, prepare properly and put landscape fabric underneath to stop the growth of anything green between the stones.

Re: Grass seed
I just buy the Scott's and their fertilizer at the lawn store in Riberas. The back yard I attend to is thriving with thick grass, except where a couple of giant trees' roots have ingress.
I overseed (methods can be found via Google), then apply a thin layer of fresh dirt from the same store. Then water lightly. Thin shoots start with days. This is, of course, on an existing lawn, not from scratch. If from scratch, then the dirt needs to be tilled or otherwise roughed up, and the overlay of new dirt is important as well.
After two weeks, I fertilize. Keeping the grass watered is key, of course.

Wait for any grass planting or sodding til the rainy season. The coming hot weather will fry your grass.

Yeah I am planning for May. I do want it rooted before the big rains.

Re: Grass seed
Also Scott's general lawn care; don't recall the chemical breakdown. The seed does start out looking delicate, but to me that just means baby grass. It gets good and strong later.CanuckBob wrote:They sell Scott's at Walmart too but I found it was very delcate and thin leaved. Maybe I haven't waited long enough?

Lawns are the only gardening I do. It becomes as much a question of brute force care as anything else. Washing a lawn with a mix of soap and water rejuvenates tired lawns, killing bus and opening pores for air.

I was wrong, it is West of El Bajio at the entrance to La Christina on the lakeside of the caretera. The name of the vivero is Las Palmas. The pieces are smaller than I mentioned in the previous post but close. Forgive me I am Murican we don't do metric well.
