(Just received the following from 2 different friends and haven't a clue as to who Jim and Bob are.)
Jim: I was a Salvadore's this morning and heard the paper peddler so Ipicked up the Prensa this morning, too. I dicussed the event with my housekeeper a few minutes ago. She lives about a block from Danza del Sol on Ocampo. There has been a large influx of people with money in her barrio and the family is worried. These people, apparently arrived from Monterrey shortly after the fire-bombing of the casinos in that city.
She told me this morning that the word is out that on Thursday nite, the beginning of the celebration of the 16th, there will be a gang gun-battle in the Ajijic Plaza. Local rumors tend to get out-of-hand, but they also know a hell-uv-a-lot more about the goings-on in the community. She and her family usually participate in the community fiestas, but not this time. They're going to hole up.
Considering that I heard about the emptiness of the Chapala malecon last Sunday, the time when the Mexican community is usually out there with their families, they must have heard something was in the wind.
Heightened precautions and, as my friends in Stratfor constantly emphasize; THE PRACTICE OF SITUATION AWARENESS IS ESSENTIAL. BOB
PS. I'VE FORWARDED THIS TO ALL OF MY LOCAL CONTACTS, SO WE MAY CROSS COMMOS IN SOME CASES IF YOU'VE DONE THE SAME. I BELIEVE IT IS HIGHLY IMPORTANT THAT WE STAY NETWORKED ON THIS. THINGS AIN'T GONNA GET BETTER RIGHT AWAY.

I have a couple of questions about this email—and yes, I received one too.
Why would “gangs” attack a fiesta in the plaza in Ajijic? What genius gang members sat around and said, “Hey, guys, I got a great idea….?
Wouldn´t something like this begin all-out warfare by local, state and Federal police against whatever gang did it as well as bring down the hammer of the U.S.? Oh, and something like that would turn the nationals against them and that can´t be good.
And, for all that, what would it gain them?
Also, if this were a credible threat every cop and soldier in the state would be there, right?
Unless, of course, the cops don´t know. Only “Jim” and “Bob” and paper peddler and the housekeeper know. And, they aren´t going to report it. They are just going to send emails and scare the stuffing out of a bunch of old people.
I had been thinking of going to the Grito in Ajijic Plaza Thursday night. Now I KNOW I am going.

u trying to understand the logic and reasoning of a gang leader or a drug dealer?
bad guys do bad things...
in light of recent events... i would suggest a little extra caution might be in order...
if u do go to your little event and if it does go to shit....
perhaps you'll be able to answer a question i've always wondered about...

Narcos and gangs don't use rational or reasoning. They look for trouble. Look what they did last night in Chapala? How dumb. Two people gave their lives up for nothing. They were clearly out numbered, by how many times, I don't know, but I'm sure glad the authorities responded and didn't pretend nothing happened like we've so often heard lately.
How many expats go to grito anyway?
Have to agree it sounds like a scary chain letter. In light of what happened last night, I've got to believe authorities will beef things up a bit. Have an escape plan ready if in doubt.

I live in that area and I can tell you the same rumor was going around for the last 2 years.

I am not looking for the reasoning from White Old Lady perspective (which is mine). I am looking for the reasoning from their perspective. These are not insane people frothing at the mouth, jumping into trucks to go shoot up the Grito on the plaza. What they do may not make sense to us, but it does make sense to them. They have a sense of self-preservation as do all living creatures. It is an evolutionary imperitive. So, what would be the advantage to them to turn all of Lakeside against them and bring the wrath of massive armies upon their heads by planning to shoot people down in the plaza? I don´t know what started the shootout in Chapala but I am picturing machismo and testoserone having something to do with it. It was not planned or thought out. The email we are discussing is a planned event.

It wasn't too long ago when one of the gangs threw grenades into a large crowd at an event taking place in Morelia. People died; many were injured.
I don't believe any of the perpetrators were interviewed about their logic or their motives.
The purpose of terrorism is creating terror. Duh.
This mess is spreading over Mexico like spilled syrup.

I´m new to this board so I´m just trying to figure out how it works. So far I´ve got that the person who thinks about the anonymous email and asks questions about the plausibility of it is stupid (duh) but the people who accept it as truth and conclude the sky is indeed falling are the smart ones?
Somewhere in Mexico (and all over the world) all the bad things possible have occured. I do not use that as my criteria for judging the credibility of a threat.

the reality is that with or w/out the letter, gangs/narcos could be planning, at any given time or anywhere, to do something irrational. Whether that is rational to them or not, the outcome is possibly bad. Our choice is not to continue to think of all the bad that could potentially come upon us. Otherwise we'd live in fear and fear is punishment. We don't deserve that kind of punishment. On the other hand, I think we're talking about being cautious. How do you choose to live your life so you don't purposefully hurt yourself. Is grito something you've been looking forward to? It hasn't been canceled so I'd say go ahead and go. If you attend and get a gut feeling that you should return home while there, then turn around and go home. Sounds reasonable no. We're not all experts who have studied the criminal mind. Bottom line, if someone's conscience has been seared, they don't think right.
