Re: legalizing car rumor
I have not heard this but it would be wonderful if it is true!
I have been hearing rumblings for months that nationalizing might be made easier after the first of the year so wait before doing it.

Probably started on the 28th, Dia del Innocentes, similar to our April Fool's Day.

How depressing but I think David is right. Another one of these jokes was that Efron quit
the cultural center but it was a joke also.

If it has always been legal to nationalize at the airport why do so many people go to the border to do it? I thought there was something hinky about the airport option. No?

What has changed, confirmed by Spenser, that as of Jan 1 you do not have to be a registered import broker to nationalize a vehicle. I would imagine the costs will drop dramatically as facilitators take on this work.
I have always found any commercial customs a pain to work with. They are required to speak only Spanish - in case of misunderstandings. They are not allowed to modify any document - if you miss one number, they are not allowed to write it in, they will send the whole docket back.

Thank you, Chillin--now I get it! And, have no fear. I will not undertake to do this on my own.

Did they change the law that required vehicles to be legalized only at the northern border?

I don't know because I have another two years. I did enquire at the airport via email. The broker said there was a difference between regularization and nationalization. I understand that it also has to do with the bonds the brokers have to put up. They can bond without going to the border - but many will not risk a bond over a one time deal which can easily go wrong (stolen car, hidden drugs, etc.)

Could you please post the email address and contact info at the airport? Thanks

Jeff:
Send a PM to jrm30655 (member of this forum). He had his Jeep done at the airport. Here is a thread he started regarding the process:

I do not think facilitators will easily replace customs brokers as the new law eliminates the mandatory use of customs brokers but that does not mean anybody can represent you. There is a list of requirements for a legal representative including a power of attorney so the reality is either you will have to do it yourself personally or use a broker.
