Re: Robbery in Mirasol
You can buy fake camera's that look like the real deal including a red flashing recording light. Put a few around up high with a sign that says you are monitored by camera (in both English and Spanish).
Don't even tell your maid and gardener that they are fake. In fact tell them you have a new security system.

CB, that is exactly what I'd do if I felt the need for a camera system.

Plaza del Sol is not here nor is it under the jurisdiction of the Chapala PD/MP. Things have changed since "a few years ago". I WISH we had normal law enforcement. Who cares about perfect.
I have a camera system, their names are Rosario and Estaban.
You said, quote….."is there a camera anywhere in this country being monitored for crime"
So I obliged…………..
I personally know a business that was robbed 2 months ago that the camera recorded a license plate number that resulted in the recuperation of the stolen goods.

Good idea, but the real deals aren´t that expensive.
And don´t believe this BS that the Ministerio Publico isn´t interested in camera footage.

Re: Robbery in Mirasol
The cameras are relatively inexpensive but you need a robust system to record too, no?

Re: Robbery in Mirasol
I have an ancient, old time Mexican house that came equipped with those 'ugly' bars on every window and a super lock on the door. Guess what? Nobody has ever gotten in there to rob us in over ten years.
No dog; no cameras, no regular maid or gardener.
The one time anyone got in the yard some years ago was before we put the bars over the garage door between it and the newly built casita above it. I'm guessing that guy was so pissed that he couldn't get in the house that he set fire to our woodpile. Fortunately, we got home in time to put it out before damage was done. He caused some kind of chaos that night at other places in our neighborhood, but got away.
Sliders? Madness. If I had them, I'd change that a.s.a.p.
Just sayin'.

I have this and I think it offers everything I want at a price that is well worth it.

Re: Robbery in Mirasol
For those of you who are DIY minded, there are several open source packages for security monitoring: ZoneMinder and Motion are the most popular...

What I am trying to say, without all the dramatic exclamation points, and yes I have poorly worded it, is: based on several robbery victims posts on the crime page on FB, and based on the fact that Ana chose to take her video to Guadalajara law enforcement rather than Chapala, and based on the woman who had her purse stolen at Black Coffee by the same 2 women often described by other victims, and caught on cameras, and who saw the whole thing happen on BC's camera video and BC would not give it to her or allow it to be presented to law enforcement, and based on the fact that the only time I needed to call local law enforcement, and I did so 4 times over the course of an hour, they never even bothered to answer the phone - I have no confidence in local law enforcement. Cameras or no cameras. As always YMMV but it does not change my opinion even if at some point some time ago some perp somewhere else was arrested for a crime after being caught on camera.

Re: Robbery in Mirasol
Cameras are good but local law enforcement is a joke, best to publish videos on social media so others know who the bad guys are.

Re: Robbery in Mirasol
Many of these posts mention they have a feeling they are being watched. Well, the bad guys don't like the feeling of being watched either, even though they know there is not much the police can do about. It is just natural instinct.
I have mentioned before that a lot of smash and grab burglaries occur upon houses on, or near forests. They can watch your comings and goings from the bush. Our new place is like that, bordering a very large farm. We are getting 4 cameras and a dvd recorder installed tomorrow - cost, around 11,000 pesos including installation and a new doorbell. Much easier to live in a place which monitors the things which go bump in the night.
