Scams involving Telmex home lines Empty Scams involving Telmex home lines

Post by caligirl108 Tue May 21, 2019 10:59 pm

It seems there has been a release of home numbers to scammers calling, pretending to be someone's friend, getting the person to say the name & then go on about an accident that happened, need money, go to Oxxo now.. how much do you have on hand...blah blah blah. While it seems obvious if u heard it before, it catches unsuspecting elderly by surprise & very upsetting. Know of 2 cases in the past 2 days... So let peeps know - it's happening again..perhaps also dialing 766-xxxx numbers to see who's NOT answering, snowbird homes ripe for invasion. As I recall this happened a couple years ago, it tracked back to some insider @ Telmex giving out info...? dunno. just make sure you're elderly friends don't fall for it.

****
On another crime note, some bad guys ripped out the new San Antonio Hospital fiber-optica 'system'... after the Hospital paid the big bucks to install it.. not for anyone else in the area of course, as Telmex would quickly tell you. So a real set back in the Telmex - Ilox horse race... Some Telmex installer told me they were building a new fiber optica station 2 weeks ago for us wee folk, so I am sure that is off.. Ilox can't get to Chula Vista fast enough.

There's a lot to be said for having an answering machine. Sorts 'em out fast. For some reason, the "scammers" never leave a message. Rolling Eyes

I was having a lot of Robocalls. Annoying to listen to the phone ring knowing, when you see that out of town area code, that's it's a robocall. So, I started answering the phone and saying nothing. The call would disconnect in less than 15 seconds. Seems like the Robocall blurb is voice activated so, if you don't say anything, it's a quick end to that call... and future ones since they seem to be dwindling in number.
If anyone else calls and I don't know who they are: after answering and figuring out what they're up to, I just put the phone down and walk away. BTW, these calls who know so much about you, I highly suspect they are getting their info from social media like facebook and twitter. Check your privacy settings!

Since I'm not on Facebook and/or its brethren and sistern and I'm not listed in the LCS annual booklet, that leaves the plain old phone directory. Lots of robocalls come in. Mystery. I like Ferret's system.: say nothing.

I would think they could just automatically dial numbers without an outside source using an exchange number like 765 or 766 since it’s robot calls anyway. For 9 years I daily get calls for a propane delivery company but they’re just misdials.

I do not get it. I have had a land line since 1997 in Ajijic. I'm in the LCS phone book and that other phone book as well. I have taken no protective measures, and I do not get any robo calls, well maybe one or two per month. And because I get so few I rather enjoy playing along with the caller using up his time.

Why do some folks get so many, and others like me, get almost none?

My partner's cell # is a Hermosillo prefix and she gets none here, while I am slammed (thank goodness for the app Should I Answer). I believe it was Bancomer that "shared" my # because most are from one financial institution or another. Bastards!
