Government predicts 30% drop in tourism due to sargassum invasion
Makes our lirio problem seem miniscule in comparison.

Re: Government predicts 30% drop in tourism due to sargassum invasion
We were in Playa, Cancun and Tulum over new year holidays for two weeks and it was a mess. Everyone was raking and trying to haul it away with some of the beach clubs already seeing cancellations thru winter. But it stunk. It stunk bad after just a day. It was piled like snow mounds along the beaches and egresses. Yech. If I had come from the north and found that I would have had to move to a hotel off the beach or just pull the plug and fly over to Cuba.

The article does not mention the cause of this invading seaweed. Does anyone know?

Saw a scholarly article out of a florida state university.
A combination of Amazon basin deforestation + fertilizer
Add increased ocean upwelling off the Amazon's mouth
Warm water and currents do the rest.
Welcome to the future. This isn't going away.
It basically stretches Cancun south to Ambergris Caye, Belize

Guess they better dig out the Roundup and nuke it while it's still offshore. Worked on the lirio problem here.

And Yucutan realtors should probably diversify. Who'd have guessed "off the beach" = No stench.

Google Sargasso Sea and learn more about it than you ever wanted to know.
