Tourism Hit
Anybody else thinking PV is going to take another big hit . . . cancelling the cruise ships and tours as they have in the past?

Re: Tourism Hit
Well, it wasn't tourists abducted so maybe they won't divert. Cruise lines only care what happens to their passengers.

How do you know they weren't tourists?

One gang grabbed members of another gang (cartel).

The report says that the cops are trying to find the victims. I really doubt they are trying very hard.

Oh, yeah. That's what the gob said in their immediate damage control press release. They don't even know who was grabbed nor do they know who grabbed them. So it must be true.

At least 10 people abducted from a restaurant in Puerto Vallarta’s hotel zone are believed to have links to organized crime, said Jalisco’s Attorney General today.
The victims were neither local citizens nor tourists, said Eduardo Almaguer, but suspected criminals who were enjoying a party at La Leche restaurant. There were grabbed and taken away by five individuals who arrived in two vehicles about 1:00am.

Unfortunately, it did make the news NOB. Here's the story from the New York Daily News....(of course, this will lead to moaning and gnashing of teeth from people who will say, "See? I told you Mexico is a dangerous place to be!") Which of course, is ridiculous. NOB has many more dangerous areas than Mexico.

I tried to post an article in the Toronto Sun. But as a new member I cannot do that for 7 days
Anyway it says that El Chapo Guzman's son was one of the people abducted. I think the tourists will be fine.

Who is ignoring it? Looks as though the news is covering it, people are talking about it on web boards, the government released information on it.

Clearly it was bad guys on bad guys and could have very well been cartel vs cartel. Whether or not it was gob vs cartel, gob vs gob, cartel vs cartel, gob vs innocents (Ayotzinapa), or cartel vs innocents is anyone's guess and it's unlikely we will ever know the truth. I'm just mocking the gob and their unrelenting immediate knee-jerk response every time there is violence in this country that it is cartel on cartel violence - not always the case. Guess I'm also mocking everyone who immediately buys into that response. Once the gob declares cartel against cartel, they can justify not investigating it.
I do think this, no matter who it was against who, will be a sad and economically devastating blow to PV tourism. Sure did to Mazatlan a few years ago when all the cruise ships cancelled their contracts for a few years.

Re: Tourism Hit
i suppose that five armed men in two SUV's going into an upscale restaurant at 1 a.m. and kidnapping ten people while releasing four women in the group could have been any one of the combinations you suggest, Trailrunner. But, if you consider probably vs possibility, cartel/cartel seems most likely.
Now I am trying to figure out if people who immediately buy into a story as officially released are different from people who immediately deem the story false (and anyone who believes it worthy of mocking). Both are having their own knee jerk reaction which is correct just often enough to justify it for them.

43 students in Guerrero, 22 tourists in Acapulco, 19 people in Vallarta, whose next? Remember not so long ago an armed commando kidnapped people at the Guadalajara airport. The aftermath and reprisals cant be good.

Re: Tourism Hit
The US has people killed in mass shootings but Mexico mass kidnappings and disappearances. How can people disappear in this air? What were the cops doing?

Yes, the aftermath and reprisals will not be good for PV tourism.

I was referring to printed news such as the New York Times or Vancouver Sun. Not these online rags. Anyhow now that it seems to involve El Chapo's son it will certainly get some more press.
This article found in todays NY Times will probably concern more tourists/expats:

Tenacatita comes to mind. Todos Santos. Puerto Peñasco. . .
Hence the saying: Never invest more in Mexico than you can walk away from. Truth.

If El Chapo's son was taken there's going to be some BIG reprisals and I wouldn't care to be anywhere near it as bystanders won't be immune.
