Drug sales lakeside, big business

In a conversation with a local business owner and friend about the recent shootings I said something like, Well I guess it's the cartels fighting for a larger share of the drug market but it doesn't make much sense. All we have lakeside is a bunch of old norte Americanos, Canadians and Mexican families, not much of a market to fight for is it? Oh yes it is she said and went on to say Ajijic is known for being the place to buy and sell the highest quality drugs because the foreigners living here will spend the big bucks for the best products. Now consider the weekend and holiday crowds from Guadalajara and viola, we get what we got.

Probably true however I have never been approached by any dealers here. In PV and Sayulita I can't walk 6 feet along the boardwalks without someone asking if I want mota or coca.

This is a very good question and topic. in all of my time here I have never been approached and have wondered where the profit is that makes it so much worth fighting for.

I think there is more to it than we realize.

Nobody has ever approached me anywhere either. Of course I never leave my house after dark. Totally oblivious to any of it.

I think it's cartels competing for this area in the middle of a larger "plaza". They can't have some other cartel in control of a little area in the middle of their plaza. Much of cartel behavior is based on pride and saving face.

I think the criminal mind always cultivates the "pot of gold", the big score -but often end up in jail or dead instead. Likewise the Saturday mechanics across this country working their days off fixing up some old car, a "classic" which will be worth a fortune when its finished. By the time it is finished, it needs painting and repairing all over again!

You might not get approached, but one or two inquiries will get you what you want.

True however I think there are meth labs here and meth being sold in quantities to the local poor kids who can't afford cocaine. Meth is a fraction of the cost.

That's what I think too. The cartels are very good at creating a market then supplying it. Not that hard to do with the ninis.

AMLO has the answer with jobs and education.

I could confirm what Gamina has to say here...but I won't. Let me just add that the plaza bosses are real control freaks.

I don't know about Ajijic, but the meth problem in Chapala is huge and obvious.

Yes, also in Ajijic. I see the tweakers running around late at night. AMLO should legalize cocaine which would significantly drop the prices and put the meth producers out of business. Meth is the poor man's cocaine...…..with some very serious side effects which isn't found with repeated coke use. Meth causes scabs, teeth falling out, paranoia, etc. etc. Sure both are addicting but one is far less destructive than the other.

Well, except for nose cartilage.  

A Mexican friend said that all these killings is a routine cleanup that happens every six years or so. He said there were flyers circulating before all the shootings started saying that those who are robbing, raping, and selling drugs were going to be taken out, giving them an opportunity to leave. He said the only difference this time was that in one case he knew of an innocent business owner was shot because the guy they were after ran into his business. I have no idea if any of this is true or not.

The new presidente had a plan to have a national discussion on drugs and reforming the nation's drug laws. Everything was supposed to be on this discussion table, including outright legalization of all drugs for private use and amnesty for the cartels. We're having such a discussion here on this board. Fine. But what happened to the presidente? Is AMLO MIA?

When I lived in Tahoe in the 80's I knew a guy who could put a dime up one nostril, pass it through the septum, and withdraw it out from the other nostril. He was a big hit at parties . . . or maybe it was the coke . . .
