Re: Ajijic Malecon Bench Project
We are up to $14,000 pesos in pledges and someone from Facebook might be donating name plaques for the benches for anyone who donates $1000 pesos or more. If we do somehow end up with any extra monies we will put it towards replacing the wood on the malecon bridges. We are almost 1/4 of the way there so please donate if you can.

Re: Ajijic Malecon Bench Project
What is the cost difference between replacing the benches with wood versus metal? I would think metal would last longer here. These benches should have been made from metal in the first place and then sanding and painting would have been all that would have been necessary. Perhaps I am crazy, but the wood seems to have not lasted very long. I would be willing to donate, but I want this to be the last time the private sector has to step in and fix this administrations mess.

Re: Ajijic Malecon Bench Project
I can find out however don't be fooled that metal doesn't require any maintenance unless it is stainless or aluminum which are far more expensive than wood. Unless it is painted regularly, metal gets rusty/corroded and all over peoples clothes.
Either way I have no idea whether or not this will be the last time the private sector needs to get involved. If you can donate.....great, or if you can assist me in collecting funds or getting prices for things, even better.

What about using one of those composite woods...they used them in Mazatlan with great success.

Thanks and yes, we will choose a wood appropriate for the application. We can look at composites too.

We are up to $17,000 pesos in pledge's now. Remember I will be deleting any personal comments or opinions that aren't completely relevant to this project. If you want to dispute metal vs wood or how the Muni should manage things please start another thread.

Do they sell pressure-treated wood down here? It works well in Canada, with all the different types of weather, so I'd assume that it would last even longer down here, because we don't have the extremes in temperature.

Will you be getting this from the Communicability? If so, you might want to get a second opinion on your own. I know that sometimes there is a middleman fee.

Re: Ajijic Malecon Bench Project
What this fairly simple project needs is a steering committee...
CanuckBob strikes me as a "get it done" kind of guy with the good judgement to make the right decisions. I trust him. And since he is perhaps a bit too diplomatic to say it this way, I will: Either get on board or get out of the way.

Re: Ajijic Malecon Bench Project
Thanks Dave.
We are up to $21,000 peos now. Harry and I will be meeting on Monday to discuss the project and go over the materials list then we will submit it for quotes. At that point we will know the actual cost and see where we are at.
Please contribute if you can. This is a worthwhile project.

Re: Ajijic Malecon Bench Project
I will start collecting once we hit the 50% mark in pledges. I think we are getting close but will know for sure once we get the materials cost next week. Thanks everyone!!!

I looked closer at the benches today. It looks like the legs/cross bars are ok. Are you going to replace the tops only or the whole bench?

It helps if you at least read the OP before commenting. In it Bob says, “I will count the benches and get an estimate for reburnishing each one (wood, bolts, paint, labor).”
