Re: Ajijic Malecon Bench Project
The bench project is finished. They turned out better than expected. We have a surplus of $13,000 pesos that we will apply towards renovating the bridges. The Mayor indicated he may supply some additional funds for any shortfall. We are putting together an estimate to present to him shortly. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this project

Re: Ajijic Malecon Bench Project
So the total outlay was how much?
Chapala Malacon would be more difficult since some of those benches have back rests as I recall.
Great job Bob and volunteers.

Great job Bob and volunteers.
There is another fellow who I took along to meet with the Mayor who wants to do the same thing on the Chapala malecon. I will give him your contact info.

Re: Ajijic Malecon Bench Project
I have been working with Hector. I just recently provided all the paint.
I don't know if skateboarders have been using the Chapala benches, but if that is an issue, I am certainly going to suggest the cross slats as you have.
I still would like to see some bright Mexican colors for the benches; but that's just me.
I am funding this myself.
Thanks.

Re: Ajijic Malecon Bench Project
Yes Hector told this other guy to contact you to get the ball rolling. Whether you can paint things different colors will be up to the muni. I do know different colored paint will require far more maintenance than stain and varnish.

I mentioned about different colors when I first got the invalid "Permit." Answer was "No." City has it's own color scheme.

Re: Ajijic Malecon Bench Project
Well now that the Ajijic Malecon park bench project has concluded we were going to turn our attention to the two bridges on the Malecon in need of repair. We have $13,000 mxn left over from the bench project and the Gardening Guild is going to kick in a substantial amount of money to help us out. The wood we want for these two bridges is very high quality and durable.....but expensive. Approximately $54,000 mxn just for the wood, then we need the sealer and the fasteners. I will be meeting with the gardening guild on April 1 to see how much they can contribute and I am still waiting to hear back from the Mayor as to what they can contribute. I am hoping we will get very close to what we need. If not I may have "hat in hand" again requesting a few more shekel's.
Stay tuned

Re: Ajijic Malecon Bench Project
Great work, Bob. And there's one plank on the eastern bridge, mountain side about 18 inches in which I trip over at least once week. Count me in for another $1000 to fix that bugger.
Re: Ajijic Malecon Bench Project
The price to repair the bridges is approximately $58,000 MXN using rosewood which is far more durable than what was originally used. We had $13,000 MXN left over from the bench project and the Gardening Guild has generously stepped up and contributed $41,000 pesos giving is a total of $54,000 MXN. We may pass the hat around again to try and get the extra $4000 to $5000 MXN. We expect to start the project May 20, 2019. The Muni will be supplying some workers and the urethane coating.

Re: Ajijic Malecon Bench Project
Bob, you have had much better luck than I did with the Chapala bench project that never happened.
I "donated" $15,000 + in paint, and that was the last I ever heard.
I went to see the "Chief of Staff" in downtown Chapala with an interpreter. Nothing came of that even though Hector was asked about it.
I give you all permission to name call me on this single instance. I'll start by looking into my bathroom mirror and say "ESTUPIDO!!" My wife agrees with my analysis of my actions.

I'm not going to call you stupid: you meant well and put your money where your mouth was. Sorry you got stonewalled. They were the stupid ones for not appreciating a volunteer!!

Re: Ajijic Malecon Bench Project
There is another fellow named Chris Robertson who it still working on that project with Hector. I'm sure he will be using your donated items.

Don't know, don't care as long as it gets done.

Any more developments on the bridge project? I could probably find a few pesos to top up the budget.

I specifically wanted the donation for the Chapala project. And if they did plan to use it, telling me that and a "Thank you" wouldn't have hurt.

Concerning the bridges, there's a nice report in the local paper today -- complete with the smiling face of our "Humble Administrator"!

bench project
In all my years living in Ajijic, I have learned that you NEVER give money to government officials at any level for projects.
You might as well burn it.
You might as well burn it.
Re: Ajijic Malecon Bench Project
So what does that have to do with this??
