RIP Jan Dunlap (1927-2018)
I am sorry to report that Jan Dunlap - aka "Big Mama" - passed away yesterday at her home in North Hills, California. I don't know any more at this time but will update this post when I learn more. My thoughts and prayers are with her husband Michael, her family, and her extended family and friends.

Yes, thank you for posting Tony.
A great personal loss.
One of my closest friends, and she was an icon, institution, and legend in her many years here in the Chapala/Ajijic area.
!Que descanse en paz! mi amiga querida.
Te conjuntaremos en "El Gran Tejaban" en El Cielo........

Jan lived in Ajijic from 1967 to1998; she ran a series of boutiques, restaurant-bars and art galleries, including El Tejabán, "Big Mama's" and the Wes Penn art gallery.
There are a few photos on her FB page at

Re: RIP Jan Dunlap (1927-2018)
We stayed in touch by phone over the years after she left here, last time, a month or so, ago.
Even in her 90's, she was quite lucid, and still interested in the lakeside area that she had, and continued to command so much respect for, and from.
I'm looking for a photo of her I had of her, when she was a model for the Dairy Industry, early in her life.
I introduced her to Michael, who was living with me and eventually they married. This was at the time she had the most popular watering hole in Ajijic, where Ajijic Tango is located today.
El Tejaban, 16th of Sep., and Big Mama's were always the hubs of the Ajijic universe. where ever she went.
Just can't believe she's gone......She was the Grand Dame of the "Rowdy Bunch". if anyone remembers that group.
