Anyone know of such a thing around here? I thought I had one rented for next week and taking three young ladies' and their stuff to the beach but it did not work out.

Yes. There is a taxista who lives in San Antonio whose name is Cruz. Besides his taxi, he owns a van (maybe Toyota?) that he rents out. He is responsible and told me it was fully insured etc but you would need to confirm yourself. His number is 331 429 3051 and he speaks English.
