Monday's Eclipse

So, on FB someone was saying to not look at the sun, yeah I knew that, keep your pets inside so they wouldn't look at the sun, and in fact it would be best if we stayed inside with the blinds closed. Really?!?!?! 

How long will the total eclipse of the sun last?

We won't see even 1/3 of an eclipse--a couple of hours on the "total" path.

Gracias, Gamina, that's what I thought based on the eclipses I've experienced.

Ok, now what I'm seeing is we will have a partial eclipse here, lasting from around 1:15 pm to 4 pm. Pero, vamos a ver.

There is also a great deal of advice to keep pets inside during this time.

When was the last time you saw dogs and cats staring at the sun or moon?

I know! hahaha Where is all this craziness coming from? I've witnessed several eclipses in my life and am not blind yet. Well, close, but no cigar.

Even my Mexican neighbors all said to be careful of the sun today! I will watch it online on the NASA site.

I've never seen anything quite like this over a natural occurrence.

I doubt if Yellowstone blew up it would get this kind of attention.....

If Yellowstone blew up, there wouldn't be enough audience left for that much attention.

Every minute of wall-to-wall eclipse coverage was one more minute that Trump wasn't on TV. I'll take the eclipse.

When Yellowstone blows, not only will the audience be much smaller, but there will be no broadcasts......no grid, total survivor panic. A bad, bad day.....or century.

We were at the beach in July 1991 for the total eclipse here. The kids were out of school and we went to the beach.  It was a very big deal here. Dominated the news. The country pretty ground to a halt. But it deserved to be a bigger deal here since hundreds of years ago the Mayans had predicted it within a day, July 11 1991. I remember the special "visorsol" lenses that cost $1500 pesos that were sold as eye protection. A piece of cardboard with a darkened lens that you held up to your eyes. They had instructions written on them that said to not use them while looking at the sun for more than 10 seconds and then to wait another 50 seconds before using them again.

I witnessed a total eclipse in Vancouver in 1979. Pretty awesome for sure.

I saw the 1979 eclipse too, in Portland Oregon. I didn't look at the sun but before the apex of the event, the street lights came on and stayed on for quite a while. It was truly something!!!

There was an article that said a lot of people in the US were "disappointed" with the eclipse. I read that and wondered just what they expected.

This was a natural event, not the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Since it was free, how can you complain?

I know some people that drove long distances to see it. I don't understand the attraction myself. In 70 years, I've seen a couple. I was not impressed.

However, if Yellowstone ever blows up, I might go watch that. That happens every 600,000 years and would be worth putting in ones memoirs

Here in Atlanta it was something like 97% of totality on Monday - but many were disappointed because frankly those last 3% really kept the place pretty bright.

My wife and I were up at Lake Keowee in SC for the 100% of totality and it was very cool!  Like a 10pm summer evening equivalent - I've attached a pic... (or at least tried)
