Shaw Direct streaming
I know there has been some talk lately that Shaw will be switching to a new satellite in a couple of years and we will no longer be able to receive the programming.
For those that have an actual Shaw account there is another service available called "Shaw Free Range". It is their streaming service. You cannot currently get all their programming but there is already 80 channels available on it. You will need a Canadian IP address. I imagine within a couple of years there will be way more channels available and easier ways to mimic a Canadian IP address. Don't despair.

Re: Shaw Direct streaming
I'm not despairing. I cut the cord from Shaw over a year ago. The Shaw Direct was for sports since I have been downloading shows from Pirate Bay for over five years and that's free... illegal but free ;)
I now have a subscription to MLB streaming live baseball for $112 for the pre season and regular season. I'm sure other sports venues have the same availability.
The reason I don't "stream" anything else is because there are far too many variables that can affect streaming and result in the dreaded "buffering".
Each to his/her own. I'm happy with my downloads and I can watch 'em when I want to and pause if I want to stop to make dinner. YMMV.

Internet speeds and streaming will improve every year. It is the way of the future. Satellite and cable is on the way out anyhow.......

That it's the way of the future is not in doubt. But, wherever I go, my tv files go with me. I can watch them on my laptop or just pack an hdmi cord and I'm good to go wherever there's a tv with an hdmi outlet. Do I want to watch reality TV shows with my grandchildren? NO, I'd be brain dead in a week.
Whatever works for you.

Re: Shaw Direct streaming
I called Shaw Direct and asked about their streaming service. They are doing it much like the US carriers. They do one thing that say DirecTV US doesn't. They stream some of the network stations like CBUT channel 2 Vancouver (CBC).
How did I learn this? I phoned Shaw Direct. Before they would help me (good security) they asked for my billing address (Seattle) and the Canadian cottage address on Vancouver Island.
I've had an account with them (then Star Choice) since 1999 or 2000.
When I asked her if they were also streaming the US network channels she put me on hold for some ten minutes checked with someone and got back to me and said that no they did not.
When I asked her whether they might be included as they add more channels in the future, she said that she did not know for sure but doubted it.
I sure hope she is wrong.
