Trouble in Mezcales?
One of our gardeners is from SA. He is pretty short on brain cells, but he has got caught up in this radical political movement based in Guadalalajara. I don't think they are Marxist, but they certainly use pages from that play book. He was kind enough to warn us the other day that Mexicans will be seizing all gringo owned properties and turning them over to "the people". They had a rally in Mezcales last week, telling the revolutionary bros there that they must tone down the rhetoric for now. I don't know if this has anything to do with anything, other than there is group running around convincing themselves they are the new Robin Hoods. If you are gringo in Mezcales, you will not be greeted with friendly smiles. At night, it may be worse.

Don't worry, if they exist, it is a very small radical fringe.

I would think it means all foreigners... we have those groups here in Chiapas but they include all non indigenous people and even some indigenous tat do not agree with them..it has been going on for years and I sure would not worry too much about it..

Mezcales is the plural of Mezcal. Exactly where is a town named Mezcales located?

Re: Trouble in Mezcales?
I am referring to the areas west of Chapala, centered around the Island Mezcales, past Vista Del Lagos. This is all ejido land, after recently winning a many year lawsuit against a large Guadalajaran property developer. It is not only an ejido, but also home to a large indigenous culture. They identify with other indigenous cultures in Canada, U.S.A. and Mexico. They are proud of their warrior and raiding roots, they held the Island for something like 20 years against the Spanish. They feel their culture and homelands are under threat of appropriation from outsiders. Recently held a celebration of their victories - and the Guadalajara Reporter warned than anyone not recognisable to them, should not attend.

Are you referring to the village next to the island, far east of Chapala?

Re: Trouble in Mezcales?
OK, first it's EAST of Chapala and second, the name of the town and the island is Mezcala. The locals held off the Spanish for FOUR years, not twenty, during the war for independencia. http://www.chapala.com/chapala/june2000.htm

Re: Trouble in Mezcales?
Just wondering if the gardener happened to say how the properties would be seized and held. Will foreigners just leave, the government stand by while this occurs? Or will there be battles? How will it be decided who gets the newly-seized property and will those who do not get property simply stand by and congratulate their newly enriched neighbors?

Re: Trouble in Mezcales?
It goes without saying, doesn‘t it? The large local group occupies the site and the previous occupants are never seen again. Simple.

But, it is not just one site. It is ALL foreign-owned property. How big is this group?

Is it ejido or indian land? Is Tlachichilco part of the territory?

What a meaningless post.....
Wrong name of pueblo, wrong location, and worthless information beyond that.
Will the next post contain information about the believers in Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, etc., etc. How about the Easter bunny....that's coming up.

Re: Trouble in Mezcales?
Sounds like Donald Trump is doing some gardening down here in SA.
On the other hand my maid said she heard a group of gringos plotting to seize all the Ejido land and add it to the LCS estate......

Re: Trouble in Mezcales?
I came across an article about the indigenous problems and concerns in Mezcala. There is no mention of seizing property or uprising. Their beef seems to be more with the local government.

Thank you for this; it explains the problem.
I understand that they want to continue to keep control of their land, but this problem exists all over the globe, with its roots in .....MONEY. The locals say they want to do the development, but they lack the financial resources themselves, and are hoping the government will help them. Meanwhile the moneyed interests are ready, as always, to swoop in and do it their way. I don't hold out much hope for the townspeople.

Re: Trouble in Mezcales?
Given the concerns, I don't understand why anyone would want to develop anything up there at this point. There is a lot of open land between Chapala and Mezcala and even more on the Southside of the lake. Why bother. I highly doubt this is driven by expat expansion as the article suggests. More likely lower budget development for weekender tapatio's.
