Trouble at the airport Empty Trouble at the airport

Post by CanuckBob Mon Feb 29, 2016 2:24 pm

I just got back from the airport and there is a protest blockade underway. Looks like farm workers as there are tractors blocking the front of the terminal. They have also blocked the parkade so people are dumping their cars everywhere. Better give yourself lots of time if travelling this afternoon. It look like it will be complete gridlock soon.

My husband just got back from dropping off guests. There were protesters blocking him from entering the parking structure so he had to drop them at the terminal.

I am amazed that the Federales are letting them mess around with a federal facility. I would have thought after the last flight in last night they would have cleared them out and set up check points.

I have to pick up my mother tomorrow afternoon. She's 94 so any trouble is serious. Please if anyone goes in the morning kindly post if it is over or not.

Hi Michael, I suggest you take someone with you so you can go in and assist your mother if necessary. They can they drive loops around the airport if necessary. Hopefully the problem will be cleared up by then. I suspect it's already gone because I haven't read about it on TOB, but then it is not a serious noise or butter issue.

Driver picked up my son at the airport this morning. He was able to park right in front of the airport where there usually is no parking. My son said it was hectic and this was at 6 a.m. It will just get worse as the day goes on.

Just got dropped off at GDL...it is now 1pm. Traffic is a mess, parking garage blocked. We took the road where the rental cars are and were able to get through to the terminal. Can't get into the garage. Spoke to a few people and they said it is a protest as the airport is built on indigenous land and the airport has not paid them the rent they were promised. No telling how long this will go on. Tents also set up in front of the terminal with protesters. Very peaceful though.

Trouble at the airport Empty Re: Trouble at the airport

Post by Canada_Mike Wed Mar 02, 2016 4:44 pm

As i mentioned earlier I had to pick my mum at GDL. Since she's 94 and flying alone I had to be there. I arrived about 1, and cars were being sent around to park along the normally illegal curbs, as the parking garages were blocked. I was as far as the OXXO and looked to be going around again. I found myself stopped up against four orange pylons marking off what turned out to be a shuttle bus stop. I got out, moved one of the pylons and pulled in. A gentleman came over and nicely explained I was parking illegally because of the shuttle. Look, he said, (this was all in Spanish,) that Federale will give you a ticket. I walked over to the Federale's window and explained about my ancient madre. Don't worry, he said, just park there.

Of course, once I realised it was indigenas, I knew they couldn't arrest them. Masses would flood the airport.

Best bet until this is over is to use cell phone contact.

Hope anyone on this board who goes to the airport can keep us updated. Will be coming home (GDL) Saturday evening. If this is still going on I will take a cab rather than be picked up

Mike you may want to borrow or rent a wheel chair. so you can wheel your mother out and go with someone who can take care of the bags. I cannot the demonstrators would do anything to an old lady but at least she would not have to wal or stand if you guys get delayed.

Nothing to do with indigenous land. It is ejido land that was expropriated from the ejido el Zapote to built the airport -

The airport was built in 1966.
Why are they now starting to "rebel" some 49 years later?

The Guadalajara International Airport also called Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla Airport (IATA: GDL, ICAO: MMGL), was built in 1966 and is located 16 kilometers from the city of Guadalajara.

There is no status of limitation on the ejido rights so maybe 46 years later the ejido decided they wanted money for the land , it would not be the first time an ejido wakes up..
Last week I went to Tila, Chiapas on the border with Tabasco. I was looking for chol artesania and the city is a very popular pelgrimage place for El Señor de Tila which is a black christ.

Back in 1930 the place was declared ejido but also the head of the municipality and there has been fighting off and on since 1934.
Last week as we arrived the place was deserted, all the religious stands were closed but we figured it was late in the afternoon. I walked into a store to ask the lady about artesania and my husband went ahead of me, we agreed to meet at city hall where I was going to check with the authority where the people I was looking for were.
The lady in the store told me there was trouble in town and everyone was scared...we agreed to meet the next day to go to villages together as she spoke Chol.
I met my husband on his way back from city hall and he told me there was no city hall everything was burnt out and demolished..
That happened in December 2015, I do not remember hearing aout it but now the ejido people who are mostly indigenous and zapatistas kicked out the government(verde) and police and took over and want the ejido to take over all properties.
The lady from the store who has lived there all of her life and her family before her and who speaks Chol told me everyone in the center was scared and were at risk of losing their property rights..and all the trouble started with the ejido being declared back in 1930 so things can go on for a very long time with ejidos...

Ejido and/or Indigenous lands were different kinds of vehicles of land reform after the Revolution and new Constitution of 1917.
It's somewhat complicated and would require a lot more time and space than this board to fully or even partially understand all of the ins and outs that were laid down.  On top of that, so many infractions and supposed legal rulings have made it even more murky in case by case instances.  The best thing you can hope for is that "your" property was never involved in these classifications.
Having said that, you probably have a 50/50 chance or better, that you will skate free in these challenges....like the Mision del Lago project in  upper Ajijic.

Brigitte is correct and there is no statute of limitations although some Ejidos routinely extort money from people and new projects as has happened in Upper Ajijic.

Spencer I read that El Zapote claims they are owed 7.5M by the airport. Is that past money for lease? You read what the ejido is claiming but that is the side of the company /ies that own the airport? These ejidos´claim are always hard to understand to me.
Is this the case of the ejido trying to get more money or are they owed money or something else??

Canada-Mike
As Slaintes or Intercasa would say these cases are murky and complicated.
I was in a meeting not long ago with the owner of a corporation who wanted to buy land and the lawyers and bankers told him stay away from  Indigenous land.."we can deal with ejido land but forget buying Indigenous land" so being a person of little means I woul stay away from both of them.

In Chiapas I have tried many times to understand why conflicts happen and did read a lot and study or try to study the claims from both sides. Usually down here the left is extremely vocal and it is not easy to find out about the other side..so I listen a lot and just about every time I am left with a big question mark.
The case of Tila is so screwed up that frankly I do not see how anybody can resolve it and it probably will end up badly for the mestizos.

As far as the airport is concerned I would think that there will be some temporary or permanent resolution eventually as the government cannot let an airport be at the mercy of a ejido but who knows..

If someone tried to sell me land on Indian (indigenous) Reservations in Arizona or anywhere in the US, and I was not a tribal member, I wouldn't touch it either.
Now I'm sure they are giving solid leases to the casino operators, but that is in a place where the legal system is a few light years ahead.

I really want to know what Ejido means? Is it a neighbourhood? A community? A tribe?
