It is indeed very sad and I express my condolences to the family.
Atotonilco is not a suburb of San Miguel. It is a separate town that is a good 15 minutes by car on a highway to get to it.
After dredging up other nasties that have happened, I think the last line of the article puts it into perspective...
"15 Canadians killed since 2006"

Yeah no kidding. I'm sure at least 15 Canadians were killed up here over the long weekend from drinking and driving. Typical media BS. Since about 5 million Canadians have visited Mexico since 2006 that makes it about .0000025%. Chances are higher you'll drown in the bathtub vs getting killed in Mexico. I know at least 4 of the 15 that were killed were drug gangsters from Vancouver.
