Post by BILLBOGEY Mon Aug 08, 2016 1:12 pm

I am an avid golfer planning to come Lake Chapala in next few weeks. I have an old Golf Logic GPS from 2008 that still works well on the Saint Louis courses I have programmed.
I need some advice on what GPS gadgets work well in The Lake Chapala area.
I would appreciate any feed back and also where you suggest purchase, in the US or MX. I did check Garmin website and Chapala Country Club as well as Atlas is listed.
Thanks, BB

I have a Tom Tom I bought in Texas but I also bought and downloaded the maps for Mexico. I know with Tom Tom they allow users to update maps and your choice to use them. Many roads in Mexico are not on many maps. And some GPS maps can be off a little. If you use your GPS be sure to download the Mexico maps before leaving home.

Thanks, but I was just looking for the golf course GPS. Now that you mention it, I have a TOM TOM GPS, probably 7 years old, that I could try. I know it worked on a trip from Saint Louis to Atlanta about 5 years ago. It may more trouble to download maps since i have to use library PC.

I realize most of the golfers may be gone up north now. If any golfers are here now using the Garmin GPS, I would like your opinion based on what you are using. Not sure which to get, looked at different models,,S1,S2,S4,S6 and the hand held models.
Thanks, BB

They all give you the distance to the front, middle and the back of the green.
The more you spend on the higher end units gives you more "bells & whistles".

You golfers and drivers should be ashamed of yourselves.
I managed to get from Maine to the South Pacific and back before GPS was available. How hard can it be to navigate a few acres of golf links, or to drive anywhere in North America? pirat

Yes, RV, but you had an "Uncle" chauffeuring you around most of the time, no?  Using Garmin GPS for Lake Chapala area Golf courses 860299

No, Rick. I sailed my own boat and used an old 1942 Navy surplus sextant and the appropriate almanacs to solve the position problems. No batteries involved. Those were some of the best years of my life. I wish I could do it again.

Only the snowbird visitor golfers are up north. Those of us resident golfers don't use such devices. Our caddies give us the yardage if we don't know. I'm played my course for over 8 years now and know the yardages myself as do the guys I play with. A handheld device on the course is a needless distraction IMHO.

CADDIES? I worked this last spring at a private country club, the "A" caddies got about $75.00 and "B" caddies $60.00 for 18 holes.
I played 1 round of 9 holes at the public golf course between Ajijic and Chapala when I visited in 2011. I was required to take a caddie who was not very useful, english not very good. I did notice the 2 Canadian guys I played golf with did not have caddies. Just let me take a pullcart and walk. I also realize it may be the custom in Lake Chapala at both courses to have a caddy. I guess it provides work for the locals.
The only time I used a caddy before was at the 8th Army golf course in Seoul Korea. They were young Korean gals who used a pull cart, did not carry the bag. They spoke some english and did not laugh when you hit a butcher ball. I think they got $5.00 and tip for 18 holes. (the monthly dues were $11.00 and 50 cents greens fee.) I don't remember the Army golf courses in Germany having caddies. The golf courses I play in Saint Louis do not have caddies.
I played 2 courses last week that were not on my Golf Logic GPS. Unless your were near the yardage marker, it was tough to get right club. I will bring a Garmin GPS with me and use it until I get smart enough to not need it.
Thanks for your replies here. BB

As I recall, I took you to Atlas and we played with my caddie. Caddy cost for 2 at Atlas is $250 pesos, about $13.50 US or $6.75 each. Once you play with a caddy here you'll not want to be without IMHO!

Thank you David,
I remember your kindness in taking me to play Atlas, it is a real nice golf course. The caddy cost at Atlas is reasonable and it is good that you can usually get the same one.
On this topic I was just thinking of the 2 Lake Chapala golf courses. I just played the public course and have no idea about the Vista Del Lago? course. Not having used caddies it will be an adjustment for me.
I need to go to the Vista Del Lago website and get more information.
I am waiting to hear from Alex driving with me from laredo. Hope to be there soon. Plan to stay at hotel Perico.

Bob, I was better back then.
However ,They did laugh when I thought the "OB" (out of bounds sign) was the OB brand of Korean Beer sign. I got spoiled playing cheap golf on the military courses! In 1987 I attended the Naval Postgraduate School at Monterrey CA. and could play the Navy course for $4 after 2PM. Did walk on the Pebble Beach course. At that time Fort Ord was still open, it had 2 18 hole courses. I played , I think, the Bayonet Course, the toughest course I ever played, I think I shot 110! Fort Ord is closed now but I think the golf courses are part of a resort now.
Even worse I have gotten used to playing a lot of free golf in Saint Louis. No free golf in Lake Chapala for me.
Maybe I will be there someday. BB
