For those living in the area and those wanting to live in the area, what are your reasons listed in order of importance? Here are ours:
1) Weather
2) Mexican Culture/Life style
3) Less government intervention in ones life (YMMV)
4) Adventure
5) Learn another language

Re: Reasons for living in the Lake Chapala area
Climate, Culture, Cost of living. Those are the big three that motivated us to move here. Now after almost 6 years we add; the people, the pace of life, and the country itself. We've travelled a fair amount of central western Mexico and enjoy the variety from Guanajuato to Barra de Navidad, from Morelia to Tequila, from Manzanillo to Patzcuaro, and Guadalajara. It's all good, some better.

1. Been off the mainland too long & don't think I'd "fit" back there after 28 years.
2. After too long around surly W. Indians, the Mexican people are so sunny & graceful in putting up with some of us who act abominably.
3. Cost of living plus I should be able to afford care if I become disabled since I'm alone.
4. New places, new faces keep the brain active as well as trying to cope with a different language.
5. More things to do & see.
6. I have 3 dogs here instead of the only one or two I was "allowed" by the former condo association.
7. The colors of everything from walls to furniture. Hard to get out of the "matchy-matchy" mode of decor.
8. Fresh berries you don't have to hock your gold fillings to buy.
9. No hurricanes and no snow.

Re: Reasons for living in the Lake Chapala area
did I hear someone say gold fillings?
I like those berries too! All the fresh from the field to your table produce!
I especially like the laid back lifestyle of Mexican Folks and Folks who have adopted their way of life...
The cost of living there makes Paradise attainable for just about anybody... a real Jem in the rough
Oh... and the Beers not bad either....

Most all of the the above......and besides that: No hurricanes, no tsunamis, no tornadoes, no ice and snow storms, no floods and a climate where everything I love to look at grows all year long. But of course.........there's always Colima volcano?

Re: Reasons for living in the Lake Chapala area
I used to pick blackberries as a child at our weekend farm & had to fight off the spiders, sometimes black snakes as well as getting scratched from the thorns. Worth it for my Mom's blackberry cobblers & jelly, though.
