Best Tamales? Empty Best Tamales?

Post by David Wed Jan 13, 2016 2:08 pm

I'm seeking the source of the best tamales. Since the hole-in-the-wall is gone I've got a craving. So far what I've found have all been a)too dry, b)too much masa, and too little filling. Where do I find really good ones?

They're not perfect, but I like the ones the tamale ladies sell at the Tuesday Market.

Too bad. I haven't had them for over a year, and I thought they were a little skimpy on the filling. Sounds like there's a business opportunity there for someone who does 'em right.

Don't they have tamales on the menu at El Serape?

Find a place that offers tamales veracruzanos, the kind in a banana leaf. They are, as we said in the USAF, a different kinda smoke.

Marcos makes them from time to time. I don't think they're on the menu though.

I like the Tuesday Market tamales but I get the ones with spinach in the masa (a bit more moist) and cheese.

I haven't been in awhile, but there was a lady selling churros and good tamales on Madero in Chapala about half way between the Plaza and Copel. I find the shop by looking for the little food truck parked just around the corner.

I share your pain. But, the last time I was here two years ago the daughters of the hole-in-the-wall gang were selling tamales on Wednesdays about 5 pm just for carry home. Are they gone as well?

Best tamales are made by Shana, She lives in West Ajijic. She is one of the caretakers of the property that has cow sculptures overlooking the lake . Her son Carlos speaks some English. He is shy but can manage. She is from Oaxaca and her mole tamales in banana leaves are wonderful.

I dont eat tamales but my friend found a place on the carretera from gdl to the lake... i know its a tough one to find but here is the tip. We where driving and spotted a maybe 5 to 6 store bodega places... building is just cement color and each store has a metal warehouse door.. the last door has an old "tamales" signs on a wood 3 foot wide 4 foot long sign just outside the store.

I do beleive there was a walking bridge 50 feet after that bodega area.

My friend thats mexican american said those are the best tamales in mexico he has had so far..

The" best tamales" can be found in the Rosario colonia in Tonala, but it's a long drive from lakeside.
They have more filling than masa, that's the key to a good tamale.

There is a lot of highway between Guadalajara and the lake. Can you give a better idea of where to start looking for the row of bodegas? What would be before that row (so we know it is coming up) and after that row (so we would know if we missed it)?
Thanks!

She lives in the large property at the end of Tio Domingo. It is the property that has two large silhouette od cows one yellow I believe. The property is right on the lake at the end of rio Domingo on the right handside.
