Re: Paris Terriost Attack
Pretty clear. Sounds earlier than 5th century to me.
I can only judge by their holy book verses, how they treat women, how they view freedoms, etc. I am not saying that all members of that faith adhere to those tenants.
So, you actually know Muslims and have seen first-hand how they treat women and have heard their views on various things? Or are you simply drinking the cool aid?

Hmmm. Doesn‘t the 5th century predate Islam?

Just pondering "how they treat women". There's a lot of abused women in every country, including the U.S.A. Their stories are sometimes appalling.

Re: Paris Terriost Attack
I know many happy Moslem women and I also know some that are unhappy not unlike any of our marriages nut we have a way out and the women there do not especially with their children as childrens are the property of the father. I used to be very friendly with my bosses wife and although she was Jewish her life was not that different from her Moslem counterparts. She was married off to a distant cousin when she was 17. She wanted to graduate in Arabic literature and it was not her idea to get married . Her mother told her you can continue studying after you are married of course that did not happen. She was from a wealthy family and so was her husband and she seemed to have had a very happy marriage.
I also knew Moslems women who had a similar life and were happily married , some others were not. One of the women I knew from Afghanistan had been married as a third wife when she was 12 years old and she never spoke of her husband, her kids were everything. Another of the same group was happily married but was scared her husband would take a second wife while she was away although he had to have her permission to get married to another woman, another yet who was 25 was very scared of getting married to the man she was engaged to but had never met because he was an orphan and she would have to live with him alone and would not have the support of other women. She came from a southern tribe in Afghanistan and had 3 mothers and a very large extended family.
There is a very large amount of sects and different versions of Islam, the blacks from Mali or Burkina Fasso are much more relaxed about it and there are lots of mix christian and Moslem families something you do not see in North Africa so I think it is difficult to generalized about the fate of women under Islam. Let´s face it if I had to chose I would be a Moslem from Burkina Fasso rather than from the Emirates or Somalia..and if I really had a choice I would not be a Moslem.

I had a choice and chose to follow the teaching of The Buddha and Lao Tse. I find them to be more valuable and useful in my life than anything the major religions have to offer.

Si, pero Stevie said, "the Muslims were stuck in the 5th century!" I don't think so! They didn't even exist then. But hey, he's only off by a couple hundred years and who's counting? Sheesh! I wonder if he even knows what century we're in now? I wonder if he knows when the Holy Roman Catholic Church gave him his Bible that he uses only selectively?

Re: Paris Terriost Attack
Yes Islam did not exist in the 5th century so it would be hard to be stuck there.. I have a feeling that Islam was a lot more advanced then than it is now after all look at what happened to them in Spain.. They were stoped in France around 732 near TOurs, I believe so they did not waste anytime but they were pushed back to Spain. In Bordeaux, in the Sauternes area you can still see the arab influence in some of the old buildings. I think Islam had a great civilization before they went down so they are hardly stuck in the past but the civilization is sure on the decline and war is not helping. It is such a shame.

Re: Paris Terriost Attack
Agreed. I visited Toledo, Spain some years ago and saw their influence there. It was a thriving civilization many years ago but they lost their way.

Re: Paris Terriost Attack
They sure did but I think it happens to all civilizations they go up and the crash eventually, nothing is forever.
There was an incredible library in Toledo that was destroyed by the Spaniards , I believe there was also an great library in Timbuktu at one time, what a shame that all these destructions happen.

We can thank the Islamic world for saving math, science, poetry and literature from total loss during the Dark Ages of Europe. They enabled the Renaisance.

As I never completed high school, I used to worry about being the dumbest person in any room I entered. Have you ever felt that way?
