Chapala Country Club
Have a friend who's moving here next month and he's a golfer. He's been looking into joining Chapala Country Club, but I've been hearing there's a lot of problems out there and it may not be open much longer. Don't want my pal to throw his money away.
Anybody know what's going on?

haven't heard anything about Chapala CC, but what type golfer is your buddy?
Does he like to play once a week, or 2-3 times? Is he a good enough golfer that he enjoys a challenge and playing a true 18 hole course?
How far will he drive? If he is serious, plays 2-3 times a week and doesn't mind a drive of 30 minutes or car pooling Atlas CC may be worth looking into.

WOW.....that would be crappy for those property owners in Vista del Lago whose property values were somewhat inclusive of being on a golf course.
Re: Chapala Country Club
I doubt that CCC is in trouble. However, if someone is interested in a real 18 hole golf course and a country club with all the usual ammenties (and more) then Atlas is the place.

My experience there would say otherwise, but there are no financial problems.

Re: Chapala Country Club
In the last few years it has become closer to a private golf course as green fees are exhorbitant for a nine hole golf course which really has nothing to offer but golf on a very nice well kept nine hole golf course. The golf course is underutilize now that green fees are minimal so members have no problems with crowded golf course. At the moment finances are good but members are slowly dropping off. If you would like a deal there is a special coming up in May when joining is free of initiation cost for that month only. Save 12000 pesos.

My friend arrived May 18 and is still looking into local golf, but has already ruled out Chapala. His comment: "Those people are insane!".

There is no "local" golf. The nearest real golf course and country club is Atlas, just 5 min. past the airport. PM if you want more info.

I am no golfer but isn't there a course in Vista del Lago?

Yes, a nine hole course. It's referred to above with the quote "these people are insane." Chapala Country Club is member owned and operated. Therein lies the problem.

In a manner of speaking. It's a very short 9 hole course, par 31. Not a real golf course but fun to play.

Very accurate observation. Try Atlas. I believe your first round is free. Great course.Shagnastie wrote:My friend arrived May 18 and is still looking into local golf, but has already ruled out Chapala. His comment: "Those people are insane!".

I would call Chula Vista an executive style golf course.....no par 5's, most par 4's are driveable. It is hilly and not an EZ walk for most seniors. No carts and individual caddy must be hired.

Correcto, and of course "executives" wouldn't need a driving range or practice green so there is none available.

Re: Chapala Country Club
Really? That's not a driving range on the carretera in front of Chula Vista? What is it then? (I'm just curious….as a reformed, former competitive golfer when I was young….happy day when I quit the game.)

It certainly is/was a driving range however I'm not sure it is open any longer.
Re: Chapala Country Club
Closed, Pancho, the operator of SuperLake owns it and the entire facility.

Re: Chapala Country Club
I'm not talking about Hole in One. I'm referring to the big grassy area between the carretera and the pink building at Chula Vista.

It's just that, a big grassy area.

Folks were using the area to practice long iron shots and pitching this morning.

i know squat about golf, but that seems to qualify as a driving range just as a shoveled off area on the river qualifies as a hockey rink of sorts.

Re: Chapala Country Club
Regardless of what it may look like to you, Chula Vista has NO driving range. FYI, a driving range needs to be at least 250 yards long, which this space is not.
