That's exactly what a friend of mine who is Mexican told me today when I laughingly told him about the warning from the US State Department. He said he received several messages via social media last night essentially saying "don't go out tonight". Good to know the US State Department is monitoring the local internet fueled rumor mill. That's valuable intelligence gathering.

They couldn't predict the fall of the Soviet Union or 9/11,but they can tell me that it will be safe to leave my home in Guadalajara at precisely 10:00 am today due to Twitter chisme/chatter they intercepted.Rosa Venus wrote:Good to know the US State Department is monitoring the local internet fueled rumor mill. Re: New US State Dept. warning this morning
There might be a little more to this than I first thought.......
I understand that there was some signage in the Ajijic Plaza last night warning gringos not to go into Guadalajara. Apparently this new CJNG Cartel has been making threats about "taking out some gringos" to get themselves onto the world stage (ie ISIS). I don't know how true this is, but definitely something to be aware of. I was at the Legends of Rock in Guadalajara last night and didn't see anything unusual however I will be extra vigilant on my trips a far.

Who put the signs up,what did they say? Were they in Spanish or English?
I live in Guadalajara, follow the news and haven't heard anything about cartels taking gringos out.

"I understand that there was some signage in the Ajijic Plaza...."
Is this another way of phrasing "I heard a rumor"?

My husband suggested that maybe at 10:00 a.m. all of the narcos will turn into a napkin. He gets "napkin" and "pumpkin" mixed up.
I am getting ready to leave for Barra in the morning (Autopista, of course) all by my freaking self. Now I am wondering WTF?

I was told by someone who saw it. It was later at night and in English.
Take it for what it is worth........ or not. Makes no difference to me.

I wouldn't change any plans. I will just be aware of what's going on around me a little more than I normally do.

The Informador and other media report only a little due to the fear of reprisal by the criminal element
And the US consulate predicting the time "10:00 am"that it would be safe for US citizens to leave their houses is beyond ridiculous.
I agree Chris. If you follow the news on Guadalajara radio, TV, and newspapers, they can't report it fast enough, and if anything, it is over reported. Then you have a couple of tabloid type publications that pulls out all the stops to sensationalize the same.
But remember, you have to listen, watch, and read THE NEWS.....disclosure here for me....I'm a junky.
I think the drug cartels want their violent, dastardly deeds publicized to put fear into the general public, authorities, and wannabe rival cartels, as it creates power and control of their territory by intimidation. Obviously that doesn't apply to their day to day regular business of buying, transporting, marketing, and selling drugs, which they consider normal mundane business operations, like running any merchandise for sale operation. Two different types of criminal activity, but closely related.

This is good advice from CBob. Heads up everyone. Watch your ass. The war against organized crime may be coming our way. I don't mean to sound alarmist...just realistic.

The US consulate said it would be safe for US citizens to leave their homes after 10:00 am yesterday,is that information no longer valid?

Cuidarte mi amigo. You're probably getting better information from the rumor mill here than from the consulate.
