Does this "UBER" driver speak English? What's his name?
My question now is if the "Uber" in Chapala works like all the other UBERs, ie: you are charge by/through UBER or do they take only cash.
And if it's a "real" UBER, can you get it on the UBER app?
I read not that long ago where an UBER driver near the Guadalajara airport was roughed-up by some taxi drivers and his car either trashed or burned. This wold not surprise me here.
As far as UBER drivers being paid slave wages or whatever, remember, they choose to be UBER or LYFT drivers, they are not forced to do it. Not only do some drive for both UBER and LYFT, there are instances (NOB) where taxi driver have opted to jump-ship and become UBER/LYFT drivers.

Minimum requirements
Most people can drive with Uber, even if you don't have a car or commercial permit. Requirements vary by city, but there are a few minimum requirements:
At least be 18 years of age
Be legally allowed to drive in Mexico
Watch a short training video
Required documents
Before hitting the road, share the documentation below. If you want to use your own car, you’ll also need to provide registration and insurance.
Valid documentation to drive in your state
Letter of no criminal record provided by your state
Electronic invoicing credentials (learn more here)
Driver screening
If you plan on being behind the wheel, take a few minutes to complete a screening online. It includes a psychometric exam and review of your driving record and criminal history.

I am speaking of UBER in general, not just Mexico. I'm wasn't sure what the requirements here are however in Canada the taxis' are certainly regulated with proper training (IE drivers license) and insurance.

You also need a certain late model car, I am not sure of minimum age.
I know of good driver with clean comfortable car who charges me 380 pesos to airport, making 2 pick up stops for me and friend.
Uber says his car is too old!!!

Re: UBER!
These numbers for Uber, are they official Uber drivers or just local drivers who say they are 'Uber-like'? Are both of these numbers for the same person?
Also, what does it mean that Uber doesn't work in Ajijic? Does that mean you can't call from there or they won't go to Ajijic to pick you up or drop you off? Or is the only official Uber driver and car lakeside in Chapala???

Re: UBER!
When I open my UBER app, it always shows no cars available.
With UBER, there is usually no cash involved, it's put on your CC.
You can pay in cash (in the U.S. at least) but you know from the app the driver has, what your cost is. I don't know how using cash in Mexico works.
I still feel a lone UBER driver Lakeside would have problems with the taxi drivers. They don't like/want competition.
Remember what happened to "Just Chillin." It was said it appeared to be done by unhappy competitors.

Re: UBER!
Last year I was in a motel near GDL bus station and I saw this young man in the office. I asked him about getting a taxi and he said he was the GDL coordinator for Uber. He gave me his name and phone number and took me directly to my destination with his GPS. I paid cash. My niece who drives for Uber says they keep the total amount if the ride is not a call in.

Re: UBER!
When I was in Vegas last, I didn't have my phone set up to get Uber so I had to use a taxi. I asked the driver what he thought about Uber, and I quote his response.
"It's destroying an industry."
I made no response but thought, "Maybe it's an industry that needs not destroying, but revamping to keep up with modern trends.
When I last looked yesterday, I compared the Uber price to a taxi from LAX to an address in Long Beach. Uber was 40% less than the taxi.
So why take a taxi.
I even has a 8X12" UBER logo sign made to hold when I'm in a crowded ares; especially iat FLL where the cars have no front plates and the Uber has no logo on the front window. Several times the made/model Uber tells you to look for is not unique and easy to miss.

Uber Pickup
Reading elsewhere, the standard pickup point is the OXXO store just past the parking structure on the east side. I don't think they can pick you up curbside at the airport, that's for the taxis.

Re: UBER!
The "government" does try to give UBER a bad time (not Mx only) due to the hurting of the taxi industry.
Often the make the UBER pickup in a difficult place, for sure at FLL

Re: UBER!
I had always understood that the taxi "union" in Mexico was cartel controlled and am amazed that UBER drivers have not been assaulted (or worse).

Re: UBER!
Uber service in the GDL metro area is a sweet deal, fast, efficient, comfortable and cheap. Beats driving your own car around the city, coping with hectic traffic and multiple detours through areas where road work and digging underground train lines are in progress. It's hard to catch a driver around lakeside unless they've just dropped off a passenger from the airport or points beyond.
Uber drivers haunt the airport...you'll see their cars lined up along the highway as they wait their turns to pick up riders.
All registered Uber cars are required to hold special, high-cost liability insurance. Learned all this from an accredited Uber driver who lives in Chapala and has recently gone independent to work the lakeside market, going gangbusters by posting on social media.

Re: UBER!
When using the Uber app, does the price quoted include a tip, or is that handled separately with the driver?

Re: UBER!
Tipping is not included in the quoted price nor is it expected. If you wish to tip, it is between you and the driver. I've found that the drivers are surprised and very appreciative when a tip is offered.

Re: UBER!
Uber had an information tent in the Chapala plaza this week. I was also told they had an office in Centro Laguna. The only way to summon and pay for Uber service is through their app. Currently Uber is adapting their app to provide for easy tipping, keeping all financial transaction through your account. Of course, cash may be given as a tip, but not required. I don't know if the app is active in Mx at this time.

Yes, the Uber app works fine in Mexico and the Lake Chapala area.

I'm currently in Vancouver, for a week, where Uber is forbidden. It says "not available in this area".....
