We've had a BC car in Mexico for several years, and need to take it home this year. Like most Temporary Residents, this car's plates have expired, so now getting it home is a problem. ICBC will sell us insurance but say the car will not be licensed, and that I have to get an in-transit permit from the US. My question is, how and where do I do this? I have not found information on this in the US customs and immigration pages, but it sounds like I do this at the border. Has anyone accomplished this?

It's a roll of the dice. We have driven US plated with expired plates into Arizona and Texas, and never had an issue. Most of the State Cops pay little attention, unless it is expired in their states. Won't Canada issue you a temporary permit to get it home?

I know several Canadians that attempted to sell their car with current plates, in USA, and it was a paperwork nightmare.

Good Luck.

At the border, go to the nearest Texas Department of Motor Vehicles office and ask for a transit permit/plate. I think they are good for 30 days and will keep you legal.
If you are going to take the western, Rt 15D route, you can do the same in Arizona or California.
