Overstaying visitor permit
Anybody know what is likely to happen when a U.S. citizen has overstayed their visitor permit (by months) and goes back to get another one?

You will be fined and probably not given another tourist permit immediately.

Yep, that's what I think too. Too bad they let it go for months. . .

You can get the FMM (tourist card) online but you will still have to get it stamped at a border crossing into Mexico. Your previous FMM has expired so hopefully this will not be a problem.

The man said he was going to talk to a lawyer. I agreed that would be best. Just wondered if anyone on here had had such an experience and how it went.CanuckBob wrote:Talk with Spencer.

Just go to the US land border cross over, don't stop on the Mexican side, show US migra your passport, and turn around and come back with a new 6 mos.
I doubt Mexico will have any record of the earlier visa that the Mexican land border people would be consulting. If there was a vehicle TIP deposit, that is probably long gone.
At the airports, not so easily done, probably some kind of fine, and a "don't let the door hit your behind" on the way out and could cause re-entry problems as well.

as said previously...drive out and do not stop at the Mexican border, continue on thru US customs and immigration..Go have a drink and do some shopping and then return as a newby or heaad for home..Any issues will only become apparent upon their attempt to return with a new FMM..

Sounds like a plan if a person is driving.

Maybe better if they didn't have their own car with a TIP, as they would have to show removing the car from Mexico before getting a new one. Better to bus up or ride with someone else if the subject has a vehicle here and then try to extend the TIP at the airport aduana to match the new entry visa.
Personally, if it were me, I would consult with an attorney who works with immigration matters.

Attorney by all means. Aduana has computers now and you're IN IT. An attorney will know the Fiddles, work arounds.

Those computers are signaling the end of an era where people just slipped over the border and stayed for the next 30 years. The guy in question is now seeing an attorney...at last.

Re: Overstaying visitor permit
Let's hope Mexico's next step with their computerized system is to restrict entrance to those with criminal records like Canada and the US does. Their tourism will take a slight hit but better to keep the criminal's out.

I drove out in April 2017 and turned in my TIP but did not turn in my FMM.
In April 2018, I got a new FMM online. Paid online and printed the FMM and receipt. When crossing into Mexico via the Nogales Mariposa crossing, I had the online FMM stamped as well as my passport. Needed the printed FMM and a copy of the receipt. No problems were encountered by not turning in the FMM in 2017.
Things could change in the future??????????
