Rumors - Any Truth???

I have heard rumors and ONLY RUMORS that the police department here has been so badly mismanaged that they can no longer afford to insure the police officers, so if they are injured on the job it is their expense to get medical treatment, and that they are down to a skeleton staff to save on $$$. Also they only have a few vehicles that still run.
Can anyone confirm or deny these rumors?

Never heard this rumor!

I thought they were presented with several (don't remember how many) new trucks this summer  by the state government. They are the big black ones you see around the municipio.

I heard a Rumor today as well...

Chapala, San Anton, and possibly Ajijic are to be visited by some people from Guadalajara over the next three days and they will be conducting a DOG CULL...

There are a couple of guys running around in Chapala frantically looking for their dogs.

Municipal mismanagement is rampant

Government and management in the same sentence is a cause for confusion.
Now, where is that bottle of Ardbeg?

Yes the two black trucks are still running, lucky the state government gave them to the Chapala police or they would be in deep right now without them.

I live very close to the police station and for the last couple of weeks there has been virtually no personal cars and trucks of the police parked overnight. Usually the streets surrounding the police station are quite filled with several cars and trucks the police use to get to and from work in, (also sleep in) and these just have not been around for the last while. Also the morning shift change is a fraction of what it usually is. Maybe there is some truth to the rumor about cutting back on labor to save money???

Fifteen (15) cops to be laid off today here in Chapala.

They already lost about 16 officers to the new fuerza special unit. They will lay off some today that do not pass the nation wide tests that were ordered in 2009.

Things have just been quiet around here lately with the exceptions of home breakins.

I still see plenty of trucks and motorcycle police around.

100's got axed in Guadalajara for not passing these new tests. (and in other parts of Mexico, as well)

What's better or worse....crooked or untrained/incompetent cops  vs. no cops?

Some of the cops that may be axed simply for having tattoos, for having done stupid things in their youth (but have made a complete change) and are not corrupt but are facing trying to figure out supporting their families. Not All black and white.

I agree......my post was a "just sayin".
Usually after a dysfunctional crisis, there is some degree of zealotry before common sense takes hold.

Someone I talked with tonight said that many who will make the cut will now be nationwide certified so to speak and can then look for jobs in other places that pay better. For example, many of our Chapala police actually live in guadalajara. The police there make 10,000 pesos a month versus the 7,000 a month they make here. So some here will go where the better offerings and now openings are leaving us without more than a handful of cops who will be even more overworked than they already are.

Not sure if it is possible but maybe the municipality should abandon the municipal force and seek a state police force.

eventually there will no longer be municipal police in all of mexico,not just jalisco, but that's a long way off.a shorter range plan for jalisco is a state police and the elimination of vialidad as well as municipal but even that won't be done in a hurry. this vetting process is the beginning though.

Last night 3 members of the new Fuerza Unica in Guadalajara were arrested in the middle of an extortion attempt.

Cucarachas rule the earth, they can be seen in amber as they existed 3 million years ago and they will continue to survive ..you kill 3 and there are thousands of millions more hidden somewhere..They can be somewhat controlled but not wiped out.

All cops in Mexico are corrupt. The system demands it. You are either in, or out.

years ago , a mexican friend told me " until you get to the station, you can always make a deal...no matter the charge."
comforting advice.

If the police are going to be sanitized and the corruption cleaned up somewhat, it will take a few years.  Even if that happens, the real problem is getting the people to have confidence in the police and the police to have credibility with the people. Because of their track record, that might take several generations.
