Re: Templarios
Yup. You need to find sources you trust (good luck with that) and do your own research. And, then other people will question you about your credibility and punch holes in what you believe is the truth you have carefully sussed out. It is a favorite pass time around here.

Re: Templarios
the autodefences ARE generally looking after their own communities. they only go elsewhere when invited and then show those people how to set up their own organization but they do have open communication with each other. the setting up of the rurales was merely an attempt by the viceroy to disband the autos and the people know it. note that doctor mireles refused to disband and join the rurales gang. look what's happening to him. contrary to what some believe, doctor mireles has much support and so do the remaining autodefensas.slainte39 wrote:Having passed through Cheran several times this year, I think the local guys are doing OK with their little town militia...always polite and respectful to outsiders that I know of.
I don't think locals (Purepechas, etc.) in that area, draw much distinction between fuerzas rurales or autodefensas (government or private designed) if they are not from the local communities.
as to your disappointment kitchener, your last question was answered with an intelligent "whatever" by the expert you addressed.

Re: Templarios
Even though I have made three trips to the area this year, I can't really answer your question about growers, as the family of my compadre are carpenters, ice cream makers, etc., not growers. It's not the kind of question that you would walk up to and ask a stranger, i.e. "who are you paying off to do business?"
Most of the people on this board don't live, and probably don't go over to Michoacán, and if they do, it's as "turistas extranjeras", and not capable of gathering intelligence.
You hear stories, pro and con, over there about a lot of issues, but how can you repeat them without knowing the credibility of same.
I would be suspect of any information from anyone over there, including government, local media, or anyone else professing to being an "expert source" of same....just too cynical and trying to cover my own a$$.
Having said that there seems to be a couple of posters on this and other boards who live in Jalisco or Mexico City that have all the answers.

Re: Templarios
Meanwhile, federal and state authorities continue to roundup the thugs. Jesus Tapia, who is described as a close associate of La Tuta and one of Mexico's most-wanted criminals, has been arrested for the murders of 12 federal police officers in 2009. Once again, we are reminded that the current government is still cleaning up the mess left behind by the bumbling fools who preceded them. From Informador...

A shootout between "rival gang factions" left six dead in Uruapan. The national press reports are pretty vague and fail to mention which factions were involved. However, according to local Michoacan news sources, a narco banner was found on the scene, announcing that the Cartel Jalisco New Generation has arrived in town. From Borderland Beat...

Re: Templarios
Not much in the way of an update. Basically, La Tuta is still free and Mr. Mireles is still locked up.
As for Mr. Tuta, the government continues to claim that capturing him is one of their top priorities. They claim he is no longer an effective leader since their relentless search forces him to move about often...sometimes with assistance from the local population.
In the case of Mr. Mireles, an appeal for his release from prison due to irregularities in his arrest was apparently ignored by the court. According to Mireles' attorney, Salvador Molina, the court had a deadline of September 17 to reach a decision on the appeal. Well, the 17th came and went...and not a word from the court.

Re: Templarios
That photo of La Tuta meeting with the mayor of Aquila turned out to be bogus. Oh yeah, that is Mr. Tuta seated next to hizoner. But this was hardly some sort of a private, conspiratorial meeting between the two. The photo is a still shot from a video that was taken at a community meeting at a local elementary school...something like a PTA meeting. The mayor claims he was coerced into attending the meeting due to threats from Mr. Tuta.
So what the fuck was La Tuta doing at a PTA meeting? And why the fuck did it take threats from a criminal cartel to get the mayor to attend? As a former teacher, perhaps Mr. Tuta has a special interest in education. If nothing else, this is a reminder of just how pervasive the Templarios were, reaching into every aspect of the society...and just how acceptable that was to a large segment of that society.

Re: Templarios
Alex....PTA=parents, TEACHERS , assn.
Just heard that it doesn't pay to do business or associate with La Tuta.
The government just seized the hotel and warehouse in the town, where La Tuta was conducting many of these interviews/meetings that are circulating on video, as of late. Also a gasolinera where the Templarios fueled up. I imagine it would have been a difficult task for an attendant at a gasolinera to refuse service to these guys.

Re: Templarios
As Slainte noted, the government continues its efforts to track down and eliminate the Templarios. Pablo Magana Serrato, La Morsa, is being described in the Mexican press as one of La Tuta's closest associates. Last week, Mr. Tuta's brother apparently committed suicide as a military assault team closed in to arrest him. Also last week, one of Mr. Tuta's personal bodyguards was arrested. Anyone who thinks that the government is not actively pursuing La Tuta is obviously misinformed.
Of course, the capture of Hector Beltran Leyva is the big news. The Templarios are just a bunch of small-time country hicks compared to the Beltran Leyva Organization. However, taking down the heads of these cartels really has little effect on controlling organized crime. Someone else just steps in to take his place. Or worse, the underlings fight for control of the organization. This scenario was repeated over and over during the Calderon regime...with disastrous results.

I don't think the investigation and action in Coahuila had anything to do with what happened in Guerrero. And besides, it wasn't any kind of a diversion, little alone, a perfect one.
The Mexican newspapers are full of what happened in Iguala, very little about the capture of Carrillo Fuentes.
