Who's up for a good conspiracy theory? It goes something like this:
Although the Templarios tolerated some drug trafficking, heroin was strictly forbidden in their domain. It was, indeed, against their religion. Under Templario law, heroin dealers could be executed and farmers caught growing opium poppies could have their lands confiscated. This put a big crimp in the incomes of many farmers and sent some of them into exile in California. To fight back, the farmers in California took up a collection in order to organize and arm the vigilante movement. The middleman in this theory, as in the General Naranjo theory, is Mireles.
Is opium production prohibited by the Templarios?

Re: Templarios
and are flights of fantasy really necessary? who came up with this conspiracy theory at 4 am? just mentioning something slipshod like this will have some less knowledgeable people reading this consider it a reality.

I don't think that is a satirical piece. It is an editorial analysis.

Nicely written and tight on the mark. Pretty much what I have been telling your pal the reportero for weeks.

Isn't the manufacturing and exportation of crystal meth one of the templario's main revenue sources? Why would they object to growing poppies? What's your source for that information?Smartalex wrote:

The Templarios main source of income is from their operations at the port of Lazaro Cardenas. Precursor chemicals for the production of meth are shipped into the port, most of which are transshipped through Templario territory to locations outside Michoacan, where the "cooking" is done. Meanwhile, iron ore from illegal mining operations is shipped out of the port. Extortion is probably the Templarios next biggest source of revenue, followed by kidnapping. Drug production is not a major source of their income.
Templario founder El Chayo was a reformed drug addict and evangelical Christian. El Chayo felt it was his God-given duty to save the youth of Mexico from the scourge of heroin addiction. He recruited his soldiers from drug rehab facilities. The handbook for Templarios is full of anti-drug propaganda and exhortations.
My source for the story of the opium farmers comes from a drug dealer.
There's a lot of interesting information on the Templarios' anti-drug polices. I'll post some links later tonight...after the Angels' game.

Re: Templarios
now that makes sense since the templarios and la familia before them are expert at meth manufacture. the process seems similar. but since the main ingredient is home grown instead of importing ingredients from china, steps and $'s can be saved.

Here's some info on where the Templarios get their money. The Insight Crime article, as well as the original report from Milenio, point out that their figures do not include drug sales to the U.S. and give no estimate for that amount. From various sources...

Re: Templarios
It was just more sarcasm from Smartalex. Pitufo seems to be a nice enough old coot but hardly even up to the task at hand, let alone a larger role. Of course he's a pawn of the government...and another step in neutralizing the influence of Mireles and the entire vigilante movement. Whether or not I agree with the general policies of this government, I have to admit they have done a truly remarkable job in this regard. After all, that powder keg we have talked about hasn't gone off...even yet.

Re: Templarios
Let's look at another conspiracy theory. We'll call this one the "godfather" theory. In this case, the godfather is Miguel Ángel Gallegos Godoy ("El Migueladas"). According to this theory, El Migueladas is the boss of bosses in Michoacan, sometimes identified as the leader of the La Familia cartel, sometimes identified as the leader of the Autodefensas of Huacana and sometimes identified as the head of the H3 cartel hierarchy within the Autodefensas. According to this theory, the people of Michoacan appealed to Migueladas, the godfather, to rid them of the hated Templarios. He responded to the pleas of the people by creating the Autodefensas, not so much to help the general population in their plight but in order to destroy his criminal rivals.
If you've never heard of this guy, it's because he prefers anonymity. Of course, in order to remain anonymous, he needed a middleman...or "cutout." And again, the middleman in the theory is this Mireles character.
