Re: Templarios
Here are some alleged interviews with survivors of the attack on the checkpoint in Chuquiapan. They all claim that Papa Pitufo (Estanislao Beltran) is working with the Templarios. Be advised, this video came from Tejemedios, the same source as the original version of the El Platano article as well as the interview with El Platano posted earlier. My own bullshit meter was running in the red zone all the way through viewing this. A little help with the translation?

Re: Templarios
I don't think Alex needs a translator but I'll bite. Some of the things they said: They all say they were working at the reten and they were all Templarios. Recruited by Sra. Marti of playa Azul ,working under Papa Pitufo direct orders from el Quinentos ( chavello , el Padrino, also mentioned) . There were 25-30 or more armed persons at the reten that day, Templarios fired first and the communitarios defended themselves . They listed several small towns that they were recruited from . They agreed to work for the Templarios because of economic need and their lives and the lives of their families were threatened. Communitarios are now defending and/or supporting them .
The main message was " Papa Pitufo is a big old narco" and "the Communitarios wuz just defending themselves" .

Re: Templarios
Briefly; He claims to be a popular guy,his movement is popular with the locals, they're giving 10 by 20 lots from land they've confiscated out to to poor people ,the marines were looking for his brother, maybe that's why he doesn't like them?,he says they're coordinating with the PFP and they're not giving up their arms and could use more of them and it sounds to me like he enjoys his fame and might run for mayor someday, the subject doesn't interest me enough to do a word for word translation but I think that's the gist of it.Smartalex wrote:Here's the face of "El Platano." I can't make out much of what he's saying. Any help out there?

Jesus Reyna, the former Michoacan secretary of state and temporary governor, was formally arrested and transferred to the Altiplano maximum security prison yesterday. Chances are, he'll be residing there for a while.

This Mireles character got pretty swell-headed...perhaps due to injuries suffered in a plane crash a few months ago. He has been removed as spokesman for the AUC and replaced by Papa Pitufo. Of course, Mireles denies that any of this is true. From Animal Politico...

it's interesting that you keep calling "DOCTOR" mireles MISTER and referring to him as a CHARACTER in a derogatory sense. i put it to you that he has more character in his little finger than the total sum of your body parts. he has shown himself to be a selfless leader of people who is scaring the crap outta gummint. it appears by your tone that this kind of person either causes you angst or jealousy or both.

Re: Templarios
Well, let's discuss the character of this character named Mireles...and whether or not he is entitled to be called a "doctor."
For starters...he claims to have a medical school degree. I'd be willing to concede this point if you can verify that.
Then...there's his claim to having worked for the Michoacan department of health for 25 years. Good luck in verifying that since for at least 10 of those years he actually lived in California.
And then...he claims to have "worked for the Red Cross for ten years while living in California." People from the Red Cross offices in Merced, California, say they do remember that he and his daughter did some volunteer work for them in translating the first-aid pamphlets they hand out from English to Spanish.
And then...while living in California he was arrested for practicing medicine without a license. I don't know how the case was finally adjudicated. Typically, these court records wind up being sealed. My guess is that he received a fine, did some community service (like translating pamphlets) and stipulated that he would never again use the title of "doctor."
Some character.
(Pedro...Let me know when you're ready to discuss Mireles' criminal record for trafficking drugs.)

Re: Templarios
(Here are some excerpts from the Excelsior news story published on January 17 of this year:)
Mireles, paramilitary leader, was imprisoned
for drug trafficking
Excelsior had access to the file where it states that the surgeon was arrested in 1988 for growing and selling marijuana, yet he became a senatorial candidate for the PRD
MEXICO CITY, Jan. 17 -. José Manuel Mireles Valverde, who rose to public fame almost eleven months ago as leader of a group of civilians in Michoacan Tepalcatepec that was put together to defend against kidnappings, extortion and killings by drug traffickers The Knights Templar cartel, 26 years ago was part of that world to combat today Mireles says, according to federal court documents.
On November 8, 1988 Mireles Valverde was arrested at the gates of his home in the Michoacan town of Tepalcatepec by members of the defunct Federal Judicial Police (PJF) in possession of 86 kilos of marijuana, packaged in ten sacks.
On these facts, Mireles was sentenced to seven years and three months and a fine of 50 thousand dollars could have paid for six days of work for the community. Although his time in prison was three years and eight months.
Former state police chief says that the arrival of José Manuel Mireles Valverde on the national scene since February last year has two readings: He is redeemed, because he withdrew from the criminal activities in which he participated in the past and is sorry; or he is doing the dirty work of the criminal group Los Farías, who are claimed by local authorities for years to be part of the Jalisco New Generation cartel.

I would guess that the only way you could verify it would be go to Universidad Michoacana and physically check their records. Needless to say, a number of published articles do say that he received a medical degree from Universidad Michoacana.
I am sure many other questions you have could be checked out if one wanted to spend the time - but you seem like your mind is made up - with all the attacks against him. And interesting - he is still in the news -
today Dr. José Mireles Heads New Unarmed National Front for Justice and Human Rights http://mexicovoices.blogspot.mx/2014/05/mexico-dr-jose-mireles-heads-new.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed:+MexicoVoicesWhereDemocracyAndTheDrugWarCollide+(Mexico+Voices:+Where+Democracy+and+the+Drug+War+Collide)
My only comment is that just because something is in the newspaper or a blog doesn't mean it is true. I, for one, have no idea what the truth is - I think a pertinent question is - has the actions that he has inspired help to create a safer Michoacan - and my immediate reaction is - I think so - but only history will tell the story and hopefully it will be a true story someday.
