The Proposed $1MXN per Liter Soft Drink Tax
Apparently, El Presidente wants to impose a $1MXN per liter soft drink tax. Needless to say it is quite controversial and the Mexican Soft Drink Industry is pulling out all stops to defeat the concept:

Interesting that New York City Mayor Bloomberg has been dragged into the battle.

Thank you for sharing this, Cheena. Forty-three GALLONS of soft drinks a year per average Mexican? That is a LOT of sugar. No wonder the diabetes rate is so high here.

For more successful areas the car/truck has done damage from the Mexicans walking less. Add that to
the refrescos problem. Making water available more like NOB might help.

This is about confiscation of money, not another attempt by Gov't
to control a person's right to make their own decisions about what they wish to do with their own body.

I wonder how this will be implemented in regards to soft drink dispensers like the bars, restaurants use, and Soda Stream systems???

Re: The Proposed $1MXN per Liter Soft Drink Tax
Probably tax the producers/distributors and they'll pass it on. You'd never get it out of the local abarrote
Re: The Proposed $1MXN per Liter Soft Drink Tax
Absolutely, they will tax the producers and let them pass on the increase just like with tobacco.
Re: The Proposed $1MXN per Liter Soft Drink Tax
Speaking of tobacco, there is another proposed new tax of $11MXN per pack on cigarettes.

Re: The Proposed $1MXN per Liter Soft Drink Tax
Not surprising. Mexico will keep applying the "sin" taxes on tobacco, liquor and fuel like they do NOB. Unfortunately, it will start to affect their tourism a bit as IMO, one of the lures to Mexico for Canadians has always been the cheap booze and smokes among other things.
Re: The Proposed $1MXN per Liter Soft Drink Tax
Thanks for clarifying the priority wants, needs and requirements of the Canadians!!!

For the folks who don't know. Canadians pay an obscene amount of sin taxes. A carton of smokes requires a mortgage.

Yep, smokes are damn near $12 per pack in BC now and liquor is about a $1 per ounce (IE 26 ounce bottle of rum is about $26) so at this moment the same items are about 1/3 of the price here. The savings almost pays for your Mexican vacation.....jajaja.
