Independance day futbol tournament
I was hoping to make this post to announce that on Monday September 16th there would be a tournament held in Ajijic that would feature our "Inside Lakeside" team and 3 other champions from Guad.
After we had arranged for these teams to play in what I believe would have been not only an excellent display of futbol skills, but a wonderful opportunity to display our Ajijic kids to a larger audience, our Delegado has decided that 13,000 pesos is too high a price to pay for such an event.
This is not a plea for funding, but an appeal for support.
These kids need to be kept off the wrong path and this is an excellent opportunity to make that happen.
For once, I do not want your money. I want your voice.
Tell Hector that this is a small price to pay for a large gain.
This is why I, and others, do what we do. This is not an expat exercise, but an opportunity for us to come together to celebrate September 16th.
The children of the lakeside community are the future of the community. We need to step up and support them and show them that we care.
Please call Hector and let him know that this is a GOOD thing and we will support it.

Zen, What is the best way to contact Hector? Thru Mannix, or maybe thru an email address?

Re: Independance day futbol tournament
You can contact him through Mannix or the Delegado Office across from the plaza but be aware that Ajijic is broke. That is why we have been holding fundraisers to get things improved and repaired. While the Futbol is a very worthy cause I doubt Hector would be parting with any of the fundraising proceeds to support it at this point although you never know.
BTW....Hectors wife just had their baby a few days ago so he may be tied up.

Zen, don't you think the kids really appreciate us old _____ coming down and watching their games?
It's a fan base they are not used to. ....and how could you not help but love 'em.
I wish more people would place as much concern about the youth of Mexico, and in particular, in this area, as they do on neglected animals. They are, after all, the future of this country.
Sports are a proven antidote to many social ills affecting youth in many different societies, as they all can't become seminary students.
We don't need any more Caro Quintero's....or local street corner, young drug users/dealers.
I'll end the rant with..."let the futból soar"

Ah, but I may as well try and catch the wind.
The kids love us, we need to be there in greater numbers.
The games are played on Saturday, when their family is working...
Slainte, you and others know that "playing" before a group of supporters is great.
We got them the uniforms... we should get out there and support them on game day.
I am going to put my soap box away, but not before I say that, if the village can spend 160000 on a statue, the 13000 pesos to help our youth is a small drop in what would appear to be a large bucket.

These kids (all three age groups), are not professionals and therefore no money involved. Just the thrill of competition and a way to show family, friends, and others what hard work and discipline can achieve.
Just to watch Giovanni run them through their warmup routine and the pride they take in themseves for putting out the effort is worth a lot to me, to see.
Hell, it makes me want to jump out there and join in. (in my dreams)

Why not turn this into a plea for funding!?! I've got $100 pesos with the team's name on it... do you know 129 other people who might help out?
I understand that you'd like to see the community support the kids and not make this just a "gringo" endeavor but if the funding isn't there what are your alternatives?

Re: Independance day futbol tournament
Thanks for the offers, but I do not want to take on the task of raising 13000 at this time.
We are still 1000 in the hole from the last tournament.
It was Hectors idea to have the tournament on Sep 16, and he should provide the funding.
If he does not have the money, then he should not have told us to arrange it.

Re: Independance day futbol tournament
This was an event that was planned for Independence Day weekend, that would work around the various teams other league commitments.
Less than a month away, it would be hard to guarantee raising the needed funds by then, so there is isn't any alternative.
This was definitely a "wedding with a date" where one of the principals didn't show up. It makes the "arrangers" look like egg on their face, with the other teams.
Hopefully, there will be other opportunites in the future.

Officials, transportation and food for the visitors.metiche wrote:just curious...exactly what is needed for this tournament that will cost $13,000?
Gio does not believe that it should cost this much, but that is what we have been told.
I am still working on this, but time and other personal matters sometimes get in the way.

I put up my own money to make sure that the tournament happened.Pedro wrote:how did getting in the hole for 1000 with the tournament happen?
So far I have not recouped all the funds. I did this with the uniforms too, and eventually got my money back.
You need to come out to the games and drink more beer to get us out of the hole.

Re: Independance day futbol tournament
I speak from personal experience. My son played with the union ajijic team for the first time friday. The quality and leadership of the coaching staff is first class. It is far cheaper to support local youth organizations than it is to fund prisions and rehabs.
Our numbers speak volumes.. just showing up in the stands makes a huge impact...to both the kids and the powers that be.
The old saying that our kids are our future is very true, both NOB and here.
