But she lets him work in the restaurant.
I told her it was just a rumour that you belonged to the ocultos....she didn't believe me. LOL

Re: Best Cheap Eats
I would feel remiss if I did not add to the Cheap Eats thread with the Chinese food outlet in Soriana´s. If you put aside any expectations for fine Chinese food and just judge it on its own merit, it is tasty. The young Chinese couple that run it cook on site so the food is fresh. The "grande" offers two choices of about eight different dishes and a choice of either fried rice or what I call Chinese spaghetti (both are very good) for 48 pesos from which I make two meals. As someone here once pointed out, the ambiance of eating there is lacking but take it home and you have two meals for about $3.75 US.

In Chapala on Pepe Guisar, great "hole in the wall" torta & taco place about 2 blocks down from the Pemex cross-street, on the west side. Lunch only, eat-in or take-out. Good quality, value, nice people. The torta sauce / gravy is especially good. Yum.
Mario's in San Antonio:

Elba as mentioned already, for sure. (after 7pm only)
Restaurant / Bar Tomas at the north end of the Chapala soccer field, sort of across from the Pemex and in 1/2 block on the west side of the carraterra. Great steak sandwiches.

Hubby and I love a cheap breakfast at Rustica in Ajijic (North side of Carretera, building with triple brick arch on top). I get French toast & hash browns. Hubby likes their breakfast Mexicana (I think eggs, beans and chillaquillas?). Both are $35 pesos. The French toast comes with a nice side of fruit, made with raisin bread (I think) and sprinkled with powdered sugar... I never need syrup. We ate there this morning and my sister got enchiladas (either cheese or chicken) with beans for a very reasonable price, although I can't remember what it was.

Re: Best Cheap Eats
A lesson in adjectives seems to be in order:
CHEAP: is a word most appropriately used to describe many of the NOB transplants who have moved to Mexico for no other reason!
INEXPENSIVE: is a word that should be used when comparing the relative cost of something in Mexico with NOB!

Re: Best Cheap Eats
From wordreference.com
“When an item or service is perceived as costing the buyer less than is normally expected, the price or the item or service may be called either inexpensive or cheap.
This signals that it is relatively less than one would normally expect to pay for something of similar value. In this case, cheap is more a colloquial term, and inexpensive is of a higher register. The meaning is the same.
In other circumstances, cheap is used to describe quality, either in addition to a low price, or without reference to price. "Cheap merchandise" can mean poor quality merchandise.”

In Mexico, just say "barato"...means both words....well, maybe "codo".

This is a debate between whether cheap applies to merchandise or people?...or do cheap people buy cheap merchandise?....I'm confused

Re: Best Cheap Eats
Cheena is the one who brought the "people" vs. "merchandise" into the thread. Cheena wants "cheap" applied to the people and "inexpensive" to the merchandise. Good luck with that.

This place sounds good but a little confused on the location. Pemex is on the corner of Madero and V.Carranza, not Pepe Guizar. If on Pepe Guizar, it's an E-W street, no west side.

SI! It is easy to spot the ambassadors for this thought process on this and TOB.

Where did I use the word, merchandise?

You didn´t. The reference did. "Not people but services or merchandise or anything purchased" was too cumbersome so I took a short cut.

Re: Best Cheap Eats
Before we get lost in some kind of pointed CheenaGringo semantic bullshit....
I like the Sopa Azteca at Danny's in Ajijic. Giant bowl...delicious....with bread....fills me up.
Another place that's worth putting on the list is Frida Azul in West Ajijic. Almost "spendy" at 60/70 pesos or so for comida, but there's a lot of love coming out of that kitchen.
Other than that, anybody know if there's a place in our area that serves something like a "Lonches Gemma"? It's a Guadalajara thing, and I'd love to know if there is a local source. I know the chain doesn't have any outlets here, but maybe there's a good hole-in-the-wall serving something similar?
I need no help finding Tortas Ahogadas.
Lonches Gemma

It is important to note that Frida Azul´s price includes soup, garlic bread AND dessert with all meals.

I get it Lady...
A slave would be merchandise...A prostitute...services. Not sure if you want to go "cheap".
Back on topic...
I'll give you something that will make everything "cheap eats". Was at the Vincent restaurant in Plaza Andares the other day...an entrèe order of jamon serrano...630 pesos, but they slice it off the whole ham at your table.
Settled for a 100 peso bottle of Ciel...no postre.

You can't use barato when talking about human beings (unless you're actually selling people at a great price).
With people it's codo, tacaño, etc..... But never barato in the sense of being stingy.

You are absolutely right Casi. That's what I was trying to say about both words when being used in the same context, not the apples and oranges argument of goods/services vs. people values. Cheap people are never barato, but what they purchase, might be.

Unless, of course, you are CG.
Then again, there are those people called "cannibals", with low income.

If I were a restaurant owner, a waiter or a bartender, I certainly wouldn't want my establishment to be known as cheap! Reasonable or moderately priced - yes.
