Data transfer cables Empty Data transfer cables

Post by Flamingo Fri Jul 12, 2013 9:02 pm

Is it possible to get Data Transfer Cables to use with LapLink PC Mover here or in Guad? I am finally getting a new computer but I need data transfer cables to move my programs to the new machine. They say you MUST have the $40 LapLink cable but I suspect any decent quality cable would do.

You need software and a USB cable to connect the two computers. Laplink was a
piece of software with various types of connecting cables from the old days. Maybe
they are still around.

I have a Tornado data transfer cable I could loan you if you would like to use something like that. It is for USB 2.0.

Haven't done anything like that in years, thanks to Windows 7 networking, USB memory, and external hard drives. Hard to say from Laplink's website, but probably quite true:

"What's so unique about Laplink USB cables?

USB was designed as a PC-to-peripheral communication mechanism. Because of this design, it is not possible to plug a passive cable between the USB ports of two computers and transfer information. In fact, if you try this with an ordinary USB cable, you'll short the two power supplies together, possibly destroying one or both machines. Laplink cables include the necessary electronics to allow for the fastest peer-to-peer communication between the computers.
Why aren't all USB cables compatible with all Laplink products?

Different USB cables use different chips in the middle. To create the fastest connection, we use only the best cables and chipsets available. As we improve Laplink software, we find that certain cables just aren't fast enough."

Last time I did this, I used an external hard drive. I had forgotten that. I have been setting up a "home" network since Win 95 so I expect Win 7 wouldn't be that hard. If a network is reasonably fast, I can just do that. Thanks.

Thanks Ezzie, I may take you up on that if the network has issues.

Win 7 has the best networking since Windows started. And you can't get any faster transfer speeds.

Are you sure you can transfer programs ... or did you just mean files. Programs need to be installed and not just copied

I think Helperguy has the easiest solution and that is to network them together.

When connecting computers for LapLink via Ethernet you need a special crossover cable. I have one if you want to borrow it.

I need to take you up on your kind offer. I think the stupid 30 day Norton hosed my network. It worked fine for the "easy data transfer" but today (when I want to run Laplink) the computers can't see each other and the troubleshooter says it is a Firewall issue. And Norton won't let me turn off their firewall GRRR
