How quickly businesses come and go
I noticed this week that the brand new farmacia that opened just about two months ago at the main intersection in Chapala has closed it's doors. It took weeks to renovate the place a few more weeks to furnish and stock it and two months later it is gone. I also noticed the same thing happened with a Seven Eleven a few doors down, it took a long time to renovate the store and they moved in with a wall of coolers installed, lasted about two - three months and were gone. Not use to seeing businesses come and go so quickly. Is this due to the high cost of borrowing here? or ????

I did not want to be the first to mention the possibility of them all being successful laundries.

7eleven and farmacias del ahorro are well known chains, I wonder why they did not succeed in Chapala.
2 "7-11" have closed in the area, one next to the presidencia and the other across Hotel Montecarlo .
As a friend of mine said, there are more drugstores in Chapala than bars, there are too many .

7-11 was there for over a year. I went when they first opened in November of 2011, and they closed their doors at the end of December 2012 (I live around the corner). They weren't making the sales they had hoped to make, and I think I heard the rent in that location was going up, or was high. It stinks that they closed, because they were open 24 hours, unlike Oxxo half a block down that is only open until midnight.
As for Ahorra, the farmacia on the corner of Hidalgo and Madero, yeah, it was just gone on Wednesday!

Oh, and Ultracolor, the business card printing place across the street from Spencer's (intercasa) office closed a week or so ago. Business is just slow all around.

Few plan ahead or sign long term leases, many employees steal or are lazy. Landlords want to squeeze every peso out and don't realize that doing so will drive away tenants and leave their building empty for the majority of the time.

Could it have something to do with the parking situation in Chapala - not enough business for those stores. That is a lot of stores to close in a short time. The last few times I went to Chapala, including last week, you could park anywhere - not many cars around.

Someone who lives in Chapala told me today that the new farmacia closed because of extortion threats.

LaChula, this is very sad news. I think there are a lot of business here at lakeside that have closed over the past couple of years because of extortion threats.

From who? Farmacia Guadalajara, since they have the largest presence northshore lakeside and would have the most to gain; or are they (F.G.) exempt from extortionists?
So many farmacias, hard to imagine one being singled out, but then again I don't expect extortionists are mental giants.
There could have been other "sensitivities".

"lot of business"....
That's a very bold statement, which I don't believe.
I have lived here (lakeside) 32 years and have been in business, member of La Camara de Comercio, all those years and I don't recall even one.

No, not the Farmacia Guadalajara, the new one on the corner of Hidalgo and Madero, which used to be a coffee shop.

I understand which farmacia you are talking about Chula, but my point was...who would gain by driving them out of business.
And there are still scores of other farmacias on the north shore.
Why would only one farmacia be targeted for extortion?...or are the others paying (which I don't believe).
