be a hero
From TOB
Union Ajijic is the youth soccer program for underserved kids in our community. It provides a positive alternative to the streets. There are about 30 - 40 kids involved in three age-groups. This Saturday is the final game of this season and we wanted to offer the community a chance to show their support by coming along and watching the game (or part of it). Soccer is a big part of the Mexican community and this is an excellent opportunity to be a part of it.
And it's FREE!
But if you want to be a real hero, you can bring along a soccer ball ($9 from Walmart - SIZE 5). For bringing a ball, we will take your photo with a very grateful team and have the team sign their thank-you's, and add your name to the title to demonstrate your support of the community. There will be someone at the entrance who will greet you and make the arrangements (no Spanish needed). The game this Saturday for the senior team will be at 1pm at the Cruz Azul field. The field is easy to find - it is next to Plaza Bugambillas and it borders the carretera. The entrance is two large blue gates on the street by the Plaza (the same street on which the tiangis is held).
Our team is easy to spot - we are the only team in the league without any uniforms. We can't afford any, so they wear blue 'casacas' - a bit like cashier vests.
If you in the market for some art, renowned local artist Liz Skelsey has some beautiful paintings for sale with all proceeds going to the team.
Rather than asking for money, we would like to invite your involvement. You can be a part of Union Ajijic either giving your time, expertise or much needed equipment. We will soon have a little website running, but if you want to know more we have a Facebook group called 'Union Ajijic'. Or just contact me through this forum.
Thank you.
I don't know about anyone else, but I am gonna bring my balls

I played soccer in Ajijic for 11 years (1965-1976), could never get my "gringo" Dad to ever come watch a game.
Look luck this weekend, I played with club Laguna

It is always the argument. But in fairness I got two balls at Walmart for the price of one and a half at another store. The kids got an extra half a ball by
me going to Wally World. Closest place we could walk to rather than start a car up. Let me see if I can think of any more excuses.
Guilty as charged.

Re: be a hero
Do they accept business donations for uniforms? If so, would they wear that companies logo if the business bought uniforms for the whole team?

They are trying to get sponsorship for uniforms, and I am sure that they would be happy to put a logo on their shirts.
This was my first time seing these guys, and they are very well coached, very disiplined in their warmup routine and play a excellent game.
They even loaned a player to the other team on Saturday as the other team was one player short.
Still beat them tho. They are undefeated.
Phil Rylett is the person to contact. I am just a new fan.
I will contact him asap, and PM you with his info once I get his permission

Re: be a hero
I have agreed to help the club by collecting donations and looking for sponsors.
If we get a sponsor for the shirts, donations would be used for other items like shoes and shin guards etc.
If you wish to donate, PM me and I will meet you to collect.

This is a picture of the younger kids and as you can see they are a little better dressed than the older ones.
Some of the kids a playing in shoes that are held together with electrical tape.

Re: be a hero
On behalf of the volunteers and kids at Union Ajijic, a very big thank you to all of you for this support. We got SEVEN new balls on Saturday - the kids were thrilled! And very, very grateful. They were also very surprised as I did not tell them anything before the game on Saturday and there were a lot of very positive comments after the game. You all were heroes!
I spoke with Ivan about uniforms and he is happy to coordinate that - perhaps adding a sponsor. If you want to meet the kids, we will be training at the soccer field (next to Plaza Bugambilias) on the carretera on Monday and Tuesday at 5pm.
Also look out for my post about local artist Liz Skelsey who is painting for us.
Thanks again to everyone.

Re: be a hero
I am thinking that perhaps Inside Lakeside could be a sponsor and our members here could donate 1 uniform each. How many players on a team? How much for 1 uniform complete with logo?
